ok heres the problem first of all there should be no shaft play what so ever on the compressor shaft in no direction well i have shaft play. second when I start the car my boost gauge shows 0psi when it should show vac and when I bring it up to 5,000 or 6,000 rpms in nuetral then the boost gauge shows 8-10psi when the gauge should go to 0psi. third is when I drive it there is NO POWER at all but the boost gauge is reading 8-10psi and it makes a fluttering sound when I let off the gas (when i am driving it or not) and yes I do have the HKS blow off valve and it is working fine. I just dont know what it could be so if any knows what the problem could be I would love to know. Thanks.

My guess is your gauge is F*cked up, I can't think of anything that would cause those kind of symptoms. Try a different gauge, or get a TT w/ one. Are you sure it's hooked up to the right vaccum line? Anyway if I had to guess I would say boost leak and a malfunctioning gauge. How much play do you have? What direction? A little side to side play is normal. Chances are if there was alot of play you'd notice right away. Give us a list of your setup(engine wise), what vaccum line you tapped into for the gauge, and any other symptoms. Is the car drivable? Will it rev up, does it buck, is it running rich, etc. It's hard to diagnose problems over the net but if you give us all the info you can we can try to give you some direction.

i would have guessed maybe a bleed in the bov. are you sure its working correctly?
A bleed in the bov? I have no clue wtf you are talking about. Are your reffering to the BOV leaking off boost? or a vaccum leak? Either way, neither of these would result in what he's mentioned above.

i think he is talking about a blown BOV diaphram, which can happen and do cause some weird problems when it does.
basicaly it causes an air leak which air can get in and out.
might be worth checking.
also sounds like the boost gauge is fucked up, causing weird readings.
but yeah, check for leaks in the intake system all around.

My boost gauge is new and is hooked up to the vacume port right under the throttle body. i know for a fact that the BOV is not leaking and yes the car is driveable but like i said there is no power. Shaft play only moves one way and i think its the turbo that makes the fluttering soun. Does anyone think it could be the wastgate or maybe the turbo isnt getting any oil to it and it is struggeling to turn? When i had my first SR20DET in my car that spun that crank bearing everything was hooked up the same but the turbo didnt have boost until 5,000rpm. I thought it was just turbo lag but when i took that engine back out i saw that the wastegate shutter was loose so i tightened it and now all this is happening. If i cant fix it i will just take it to a shop soon but i just dont know what the hell is going on. Thanks for all the replys!!!

Fluttering sound happens when you let off the gas right? That's the wastegate

The shop I had my gague installed at went through 3 brand new boost gagues before one actually worked like it should. It may be brand new but it could be damaged. Get that checked out.

Do you have a boost controller or are you just running with stock boost?

The fluttering sound is a leak somewhere, are you sure the turbo is bolted down to the manifold tightly and with a gasket? We just had this problem on Threeshimas RB, his turbo was blown, but the fluttering we had was when it would start to boost. Make sure that all of your IC piping is on tight and not leaking, that would cause a major loss in power, and make sure the intake piping is tightly secured around the inlet on the turbo. If the turbo is blown, you'd hear a humming sound when it would boost, rather than the whistle sound, and if it has bad seals, it would be blowing smoke from the exhaust, and you would see oil leaking around the waste gate lever.

he asked for opinions not you so fuck off douche bag. i have my opinion for him not you so suck it.
Someone's got a short temper. I question your reasoning and you blow up. For future reference, don't reply to a post unless you know what you're talking about. Posting false or shady info only hurts the forums. Anyway, about your gauge, try running the signal of the FPR vaccum line, be sure to cap off the bottom/TB line that you are using now if you aren't using your charcoal canister. If it doesn't read vaccum after you do that then your gauge is definitly broken. After you fix the gauge problem double check all your connections for boost leaks, if the power problem persits double check your timing. Ignition timing is the most common problem for no power. I can't think of any reason for your boost gauge to be reading 8-10psi with no load besides a broken gauge, and the fluttering could be a number of things, without actually hearing it I can't tell. You sure the fluttering isn't the BOV? The BOV will make a fluttering sound if the boost is low or the spring is to tight, but you don't sound like a newb so you probably already knew that and it isn't the problem. Besides it's pretty obvious when the bov flutters. Whatever it is it can't be too serious if the car is running through it's rev range and idling fine.

The fluttering is compressor surge. Its where the turbo sends air back out through your air filter. Its fine and normal if you have a tight BOV.
First plug the gauge into the vacuum line that goes tot he FPR.
The no power part sounds like a wastegate issue but the 10psi of boost in neutral confuses the hell out of me! It shouldnt do this at all and I can only put it down to incorrect installation of the gauge.

he asked for insight i threw out a answer. i never said i was 100% correct. i just gave a guess. he asked for help and i gave some. i know when i have a problem i would love any opinions wrong or right. maybe i blew up cause you an ass when i responded. so dont make me out to be the bad guy. there shouldnt be flaming in a forum like this you want to flame go to o.t.
