So i had my smog test before going to HIN this saturday in Chicago. Failed the test with SR20 and now i dont know what to do. i have 5 weeks to get the car fixed before i have to show up to a smogger again. My car is completely stock sr20. Full cats and still failed. I dont understand. SR20 specialist shop said that i should pass. I didnt know Chicago would be this harsh. Even my single Supra passed last year no problem. Has anyone been in this situation?? Please let me know how to pass next test if there is a way. Thanks

Oh by the way, i looked for some shady smoggers around here and couldnt find any guys that would take the money.
If i cant pass, im just selling the car. F*uck the SR20s, slow piece of SH*T. well not that slow.lol

do a tune-up.

Check the plugs to make sure they're clean, maybe clean out the engine with some sea foam, check for any loose intercooler and turbo connections, make sure there's no exhaust leaks and all that kind of stuff. Also right before you go in to the place to have it smogged, drive the car hard so everything is nice and super hot, it helps the cats work better.

If it really comes down to it, try replacing a catalytic converter, that will probably help as well.

I heard that a bunch of rx-7 guys put this additive that makes your car run super clean for the emissions test. Its like a fuel additive that tricks the sensor into thinking it is clean air and it will alow you to pass with like Hybrid car numbers....should check it out. go to www.rx7club.com and search for it

You can get an SR to pass emissions in Illinois? That must be nice, if I fart in the room when my KA is getting smogged I won't pass, effing CA.
thats funny. actually i dont even know if its possible to pass smog in Illinois with SR20. Has anyone in here really passed smog with their SR20? And why is it so hard to pass in CA?? Isnt emission requirements same all around the US besides a few states?

just lean that bitch out before you go to the shop... sure its not to good on the engine but you'll pass!

runnin a little rich there holmes. i would recomend getting a new cat and a wideband and or safc. they will definatley be assets in the long run but those things will definatley get you through this. sorry its a costly answer but thats the only way i can really safely tell you how to lean it out. i mean ou could introduce an unmetered air leak( unmetered air is air theat enters the engine without passig through the mas air flow sensor, hence "unmetered"), but it is unmetered and you will have no way of telling how much you are letting in, so you may run real lean and detonate a bit.
check out this site for any emissions related info, itll help a bunch in understanding how chemicals are measured and how it effects the final outcome, pass or fail. http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h56.pdf

ps - is your bumper black?:p

oh yea something just caught my attention. the measurements they took seem to be inacurate. co is measured in a percentage and hydrocarbons are measured in parts per million. so i dont know how they got 191% co and 19.1 ppm of hc. if you only had 19 parts per million of hydrocarbons in the exhaust i dont think the car would even be running. so check the numbers and check their equipment too. if those numbers you gave were criss-crossed, then it would be a valid measurement but yo'd still be running around 12:1 a/f and they dont want to see that type of shit at the emissions station. anyways thats waaay too much gas for cruising at 2500 rpms (around where they test i beleive).

ahhh.. Good ole Oklahoma.

I currently have a track pipe on the M3 and knocked out the converter on the 240. Haven't failed a smog test yet. Haven't taken one either. haha. I hope it stays this way for a while.

California is the only state in the entire US able to set there own smog laws.....
i have a link to a site explaining the increases in emissions laws and stuff so if your curious ,PM me

It is possible to pass emission test in IL my brother and I did it. He passed it with completely stock SR including side mount IC, and I had to switch back to stock injectors and lean to hell my SAFC II , run stock boost, and converted my Blitz BOV to recirculation with all this it still was pretty close. In my brothers case I just told him to drive on a highway at high rpms for around 30min and than go to testing station. He went to Palatine station and I went to Lincoln Shire. If I were you I would order new cat and probably get new sparkplugs (basically just do tune-up). I ordered our catalytic converter from summit racing I think it was somewhere around $100.

My test results:

Standard: HC 0.784 CO 9.648 CO2 NA, NOx na
My: HC 0.716 CO 8.460 NA NA

Yeah, it cost's an arm and a leg to get your car's registered here in cali when you have a OBDII car.
Ive had my 98 for 5 yrs now with an SR in it and each time smog comes around i bite by teeth.
