A lot of the people that come here new to the s-chassis are younger and want a sporty car with lots of aftermarket parts. I have seen countless threads about eBay seats, harnesses, steering wheels, etc... I have seen countless pictures with these cheap parts put in. I'm not flaming or ragging on anyone but up until 3 weeks ago I would have said its your thing, do what you want to do.

A friend of mine didn't want to save up the extra money for good seats and went with a China made racing seat, cheap China made harness, and a home made harness bar. All so he could SR20 his car and build it up. No suspension. Just a boosted motor with the oil cap on the other side and some cheap goodies inside.

He wanted to see how fast he could get it at night and got up to 100 + mph and a deer ran out. He did the wrong thing and swerved, dipping his tire off the road and around he went, across a ditch and into an oak tree. He is still in the hospital and he will not walk again. Its an act of God he is still breathing.

The rear seat brackets both broke along with his harness bar pinning him to the steering wheel. After he got flown out and the report was filed, I checked the seat out and it was also broken on the hinges. Multiple fails one just one seat.

So if any of you guys want to know any one tip of advice for any kind of modding on any car, get whats been tested and tried. There is a reason its $800+ per seat and $100+ for brackets. Don't cheap out on anything and DON"T GO FAST BEFORE YOU GO SAFE. Paint and motor can wait.

He's looking better and better by the day and has surgery coming up for his legs. They are going to put pins in his legs.
And on the really positive side, hes starting to regain some feeling below his chest. Hopefully he will fully regain his feeling and maybe walk some. Keep praying.

I guess I am one of those "younger guys" and when I first got into 240s/cars in general I guess I was looking for some cheaper parts. After reading this thread I am convinced to never buy any cheap ebay type things.

I'm very sorry to hear about your friend and I hope he recovers well. I cant imagine the physical/emotional pain he must be going through. I hope he continues to get better.

Different strokes for different folks.

Honestly, a lot of people choose name brand because of the fact that they have a reputation behind them. I can't tell you the best of what's out there, but I can tell you that if you have a specific about a specific item, online reviews and other members here that may have tried out or owned one can give you a better review themselves.

But as for what parts make a car safer? It all depends on what you want to do with it. A good roll cage helps. Racing seats with a harness won't do too much good without a cafe since the harness keeps you in place and if the roof were to cave in, it might not end well for your head. Fire extinguishers within reach can mean the difference between small fire damage and being cooked to a crisp. There's a few more that I can't think of right now.

Like I said, if you want better, more narrowed down ideas, make a thread in the appropriate section (you can't go wrong with the Beginner's Section) asking about that sort of thing. I'm sure there are plenty members willing to lend a thought or two.

i wouldn't keep it too close, even if you can't access it as quickly its more of a hazard than protection as it can pop in a crash and the shrapnel itself can be fatal. put it on the passenger side, beneath your center console/arm/shift knob area as some race cars do.

as for your post above the one i quoted, if i may, i think a good starting place to determine whats safe is to observe drifting/racing videos with closeups of PROFESSIONALLY TUNED/sponsored S13s and 14s and see what brands they use for roll cages and safety equipment they have whenever you can spot them.

many wipeouts happen in professional racing of the S-chassis and in these races its rare to find any racer who died at 100, 120, 130 etc mph crashes. even the ones who flip and flip. and good evidence that these safety-tuned machines work over 90% of the time is that these SAME kind of crashes in the parallel "Real world" of illegal street racing where many people DONT even have roll cages, most of them ARE fatal.

and another thing to help my case: many of the street cars without good safety are much less powerful, and much slower naturally than the professionals for obvious lack of funds. the majority of wreckless racers have under 300 horsepower because they are low-budget youth (18-25) and don't even want to think about spending money in roll cages since they can barely handle the funds for their SR swap and tunes. they just wanna have fun. while professionals and "rich people" have all the funds in the world, can afford track days, and baby their 500+whp 240s on the street because most of them who can afford this kinda power are mature with alot of money. meaning even if they don't have roll cages (mature/rich people), they are less willing to drive wrecklessly because of the amount of money they invested and/or they know better. the rich will build their 240s as show cars anyway more than actual racers. naturally, the proffessionals who race their 500+whp monster machines live at higher speed crashes, while the younger/poorer 300whp or less street cars are dying almost indefinitely at much slower crashes.

also you can't find many news reports or articles saying "today is a had day because tetsuo nakagashi - a professional racer - has died in a race".

bottom line; many many many RACING cars wreck. almost all of them live... many many many "street racers" wreck. many of them die.

so if your going to tune your vehicle, better tune it LIKE the pros... literally.

I hope your friend is feeling better! I must thank you for this thread (and the fact that it is stickied). This thread has inspired me not to go with those less reputable seats in concern to safety. It's wierd I read about this today, I'm in the midst of buying seats and thought "screw buying the $700/ea Ractive seats, I'll buy some alright ones." and I'm usually a stickler for safety. I wasn't thinking about that aspect this time.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend. 16 years ago I lost my friend Zach Little. He welded the differential and test drove it. The axles locked up,he hit a telephone pole and he was found dead up in a tree. He drove hopped up 1979 camaro. It's made me more concerned about driving at fast speeds without safety. I'm glad your friend is doing good.

Very sorry to hear about your friend, i am new to owning a 240 and am in the midst of increasing the horsepower of the car. im 20 years old so obviously i want a fast car, but this thread has made me spend my $2000+ on good seats and harnesses first rather than a turbo and other goodies to push up the ponies....

Hope your friend is well. keep us posted.

it makes me feel so good that someone actually followed through n went safe! u never know what will happen, when driving 100+mph u dont have much reaction time, n 4 those of u who cant afford safety, like me wait on it, cause good things come 2 those who whait!:10:

I'll add my two cents to his warning.

DO NOT install harness's without a full cage in the car. I hate seeing people with harness's and only harness bars.

I build SCCA/NASA/FormulaD legal cages.

IMO properly built cages and racing seats are fine for the street. If you don't have a harness you're a poser and shouldn't have wasted your money on the other two.

But a harness and seat without a cage mean one thing. If and when you flip the car there is nothing to stop the roof and car from crushing in on you, and unlike stock seatbelts harness's don;t allow your body to shift out of the way. You're fucked.

Another rant on this subject. All the cheap ass's that mount their harness's straight from their shoulders to the floor... in the event of a crash or flip you'll get to look forward to a fun injury caused from spinal compression.

Do it right, do it once...
