Godspeed Suspension Review - First Hand Experience

I want to start out by disputing most online claims of this product. 90% of the comments about Godspeed's suspension are made from people who have not tried the product and many who have never even installed custom suspension themselves.

I recently picked this suspension up being financially minded and not having much cash myself. Most of you who know me know I'm far from rich. I was prepared for anything. I had read about loose nuts and bolts, poor welds and horrid uneven damping, but all from people who had a friend who knew a guy that installed them. All hearsay and no first person reviews. I was willing to take a chance being as the next step up in price was more than $300 more and had no where near the adjustment capabilities.

When I received the coilovers I inspected them thoroughly. I learned that many of the claims were completely false. All the fittings were tight and in good condition. The welds were quality, not artwork, but plenty strong. The coating looked decent as well. The only adjustments that were loose were the ride height adjustments which is more than understandable. Me being the cautious consumer decided to double check all the mounting brackets and they all checked out, solid and sturdy.

Upon installation, everything bolted up extremely easy. Nothing needed re-adjustment, all the bolt locations and bracket sizes fit perfectly. A job well done. I actually ended up removing and putting it back on a couple of times making sure that the suspension was at the height I ultimately wanted. For the initial damper setup I set them all to the stiffest setting and moved 8 clicks back. The damper adjustment is not only easy, but with a click system you don't have to assume or guess if you rotated it a full 180 degrees or did you move it 160. it's precise and works well.

Upon initial inspection once installed I was very careful. I didn't need parts shearing off, braking or bending. Everything was sturdy and seemed to be holding up. As for the initial driving it seemed quite good. The middle settings on the dampers were forgiving enough for the horrid roads where I live. Potholes and drainage ditches dominate my home town and they handled them like a champ.

I took my car to an alignment shop as I don't have the equipment to do it myself to spec. Once I got that set and everything was sound I got the chance to test them with some speed. I took out on the freeway. I started cautious but realized very quickly that this would more than do the job. I decided to pick up the speed (undisclosed, sorry) and it handled it beautifully. I then pulled off and stiffened it up a few clicks to test. Noticeably harder, it's good to know that adjustment isn't just for show. For the last test I went to my proving ground. A local place where I can safely and legally get a couple of slides in without fear of damaging my car. The car sat flat and felt in control the whole time.

As with anything there are a few legitimate complaints. First, I would've liked some sort of instructions on the suspension, settings, ride height adjustment and damper adjustment. I've worked on cars and know suspension good enough to figure it out without problems, but it's still a good idea to include. The next is petty but I still want to throw it out there. I purchased the coilovers from their ebay store. The packing was so over the top I took me 20 minutes just to get the big box open. As I look at the existing box I count 18 packing staples on one side alone. I understand wanting to keep it safe but this was a bit on the extreme.

Aside from those minor complaints there's not much to worry about. Sure I'm not getting the cream of the crop 15000 way adjustable coilovers, but I don't need nor can I afford that. Not only is the price range on these more than fair, the quality is more than worth it. As for what you read on the internet, don't believe everything you read, especially when it's not first hand experience. The quality was good enough that my chances on coming back are extremely high.

I do have pics of the install, haven't had the chance to load them online yet. I will as soon as I get a chance.

Anything brand new feels really good at first. The really question is how they stand up after time. Even something cheap and used can feel great initially after everything is tightened up and in order. Very good review I have wondered myself about these and I look forward to seeing pictures and future results.

How much did you spend on these?

I have a guy that can get me them cheap but since i have heard nothing but horible reviews from them i dont plan on getting them.

However if someone where to buy me them i would rock them with a big ass smile on my face.

Including shipping (which was indecently fast I might add) was $640. I was looking at the Tanabes but the jerks decided to up their price but over 200 bucks on me so I decided on these.

As for duribility, they do have a one year warranty and if I do come into problems I'll take note. As I was inspecting everything though it looked pretty solid and stout. The only thing I can see that could be a problem might be the dampers but that really shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I ordered the mid level for my car ( a while ago). The guy took to long to ship them so he ended up sending me the track edition with 20 dampening levels so I wouldn't give him a bad review.

I've had them on for about 6 months. They work exactly as expected since they are track editions, the ride is stiff. I have no complaints, I keep inspecting them at least once a month, just to make sure they are good, Happy to say i have no complaints.

I would recommend them if you are tight on $.

Only thing that's not very good is the adjustment knob for the dampening. I suggest you use the allen key they send you to adjust the dampening and don't turn them manually. Also they should have put writing on the knobs to indicate which way the shocks are more stiff or less stiff.

Agreed, that was a complaint I took up with them personally. Granted the guys working there told me which directions which and sent me some free stickers (which I've yet to receive but hope to soon).

About a month into the suspension install and no drama. Save for my oil pump deciding it's time to die on me. Totally separate issue however.

That's what I assumed as well and was right. But you can't always assume so I called just to find out.

Again, sais the person who has never even seen a set.

Fyi made in the exact same factory as both megans and apexi. Don't knock em till you try em.

i am glad someone did a review of these. thank you, i have been trying to find someone with first hand experience with godspeeds, to no avail. i have been contemplating purchasing a set of their coil overs and sway bars. i think ill give them a try.

+1

let us know how things pan out over time. I was looking at the RS Godspeeds as well... 650 is a hell of a lot better than 1200

i hate how people (none in particular) knock a product before its tried. Seems like brand whorism at its worst! i understand its a cheap(er) product, but at least review it personally, and not going by forum hearsay or "i heard of a guy that knew a guy that ran them..."

ahem..

I saw a set of their RLCA's... and i would NOT put those on my car. An exhaust shop could weld those up better. And their design was obviously different than the big names, in what seemed to me to be a "cheaper" way. And i know stuff about suspension.

0/1 in my book. make sure when you install your coilovers you accurately MEASURE and match left and right sides of the cars spring preload, and mounting brackets.

thats kinda why i keep it oem for the most part.

im afraid once i start swapping in aftermarket shit, things are just going to go horribly wrong

sounds like a vagina excuse to not buy parts

the thing about these cheap coilovers is that if your not looking for something serious, or if your just gonna drift the shit out of your car, your hardly going to notice a difference in them. Its in the shocks. so if you just want a low, stiff car, then any coilovers are gonna do it. If you want legit dampening and loooooooooong life dont buy cheap. If you dont know or dont give a shit, theres nothign wrong with their coilovers

i still wouldnt buy their RLCAs

The bad part is companies like Greddy, HKS, Apexi, Tein and other high end manufactures spend lots of money on R/D for there products to be quality. Hence why the prices are so high for their products. But then cheap Chinese companies come along and steal the design. So actually alot of cheaper products are not really cheap, they just were able to let another name brand company spend all the money designing these products, whether it be suspension, exhaust, etc... and then build the same product for cheaper.

Thanks for the review man, I have personally had a number of coilover systems on my 240's and was curious how the lower priced brands like Godspeed stacked up against like Tein or Ksport. I might give them a try for my next 240, even though I was pretty happy with the D2 Coilovers last time around...and they were PURPLE TOO!!!

its interesting to hear that these coils are ok out of the box. but i dont see the shocks lasting more than a year or 2. they look ok for the price, but i still wanted a good entry level coilover, which is why i ordered some KTS coils from kuah @ SPLPARTS.COM

i have been running em for 7 months and it took them about 3 months of daily driving to settle in. i thought the valving was too stiff when i first got them, but now they are great. i drive on some pretty fucked up freeway roads and they soak up bumps just fine. buy what you want, but i just wanted to go with a quality trusted brand

the valveing on almost all coilovers are not correct. to get correct valveing you need to go to a shop that has a suspension dyno
