I am going to be looking at two 240s at dealers on tuesday.

1 has 188,000km (112k miles) with no power windows or locks or airconditioning. It's a 1993 hatch, red, 5 spd

The other has 274,000 km (164,000 miles) with all possible options on it. It also has new front and rear bumpers that need to be painted to match the vehicle(they are black, the car is midnight blue). It's a 1992 hatch 5spd.

Because this is the vehicle I will be driving for the next 5 years (going back to school to pursue my degree) reliability is key.

Is 164,000 miles too high for a car I want to last the next 5 years without having to do major work on it(ie replace the engine).

if its from a dealer have them do a compression test before you even consider buying the car, also be sure to check the oil for water and check the frame and body for rust. 164,k isnt all that bad and cold last for another 5 years if taken care of and maintained.

why a 240?

ka24de's are not reliable...

my beater is a 93 civic HB, i abused the shit outta it, i even ran 2 months with no oil, i go n check, i had none, gonna change it, loosen the screw underneath, no oil... wtf and it still ran?! i never seen anything like it in my life...

civic's pwn... 30 liter tank of gas gives me 550km's... and parts are hella cheap...

my s13, i put about 8,000$ into it and still had probs...

S14 tran like a charm tho... sr22det ftw!!!1

KA24's regularly see 250k+ miles and run great. apparently you've never been around too many KA powered nissans. and the no oil... whats your point? alot of cars have done that, they dont just stop running if you have no oil, it just wears down the parts incredibly fast and eventually will blow. Since were sharing "incredible stories" my friend hung out with a guy who was trying to blow his KA24E before he swapped the SR. "deleted" the radiator and ran the car all week pegged at the top of the temp guage. still didnt blow. tada...

and SR22? haha, i'd like to see proof.

be careful with any dealer, at all haha theres a reason some ppl didnt sell it private party vs a dealer, it may very well be they traded it in to get some extra cash for the car they were buyin there, but either way just watch out bro.

122k miles isnt bad, for the year of the car, if your planning to swap it anyway, i suppose it wouldnt really matter, though iv looked in canada since im petty close to there, here in washington, and they got some good cars for cheap on craigslist so id try cragslist.org if i was you

Summers will hit 30-35degrees up here (86-95F)

A/C is not a must, but it is very nice to have.

As for reliability all I have owned are Nissans and Jeeps. Both have never failed me. My 1984 300ZX went to 360,000km before it exploded (injector leaking), I had a Sentra that I bought for $5 (some dealer promotion) it went 3 months with a blown headgasket, I just kept the fluids up determined to see it to it's end. My brother's friend bought it for $30 from me after I got the Z.

I want a 240 because they are far better on gas than my current Cherokee (12mpg) and I want something that looks good and is not every other honda around here. Besides Ive read plenty of posts and online reviews of 240s going past 200,000 miles without any major problems.

The 1992 with all the options is at a hotrod shop, they sell JDM engines as well. Asking price is 3500, which I figure I could get that one down 3000 cash no problem.

The 1993 with few options is at a dealer and they are asking 4500, but I dont see it very hard to get it 3500 taxed in.

Pretty much the same price and I will be doing a compression test on them. So I suppose I will just buy the one I like the most.

Also remember, if you are mechanically inclined, a KA24DE in good shape will probably run you 400 tops, although you could probably snag one for free, or next to free if someone has one from a swap in your area. So, if the engine goes, it would be extremely cheap to replace it, if you are willing to do the work yourself :) Also, around where I live (Boston), my buddy's old shop offered to swap my 93 KA24DE with a 97 KA w/ <60k for $800, since they basically had it laying around after a sr20 swap. So really, I would just chose which ever does not have any rust, as that is way more expensive to fix :)

word..
or pretty much any other motor manufactured by honda. my 92 accord had over 300,000 miles on it when i bought my 240 and stopped driving the accord. i still beat on it every day, and ran it hard all the stinking time. the timing belt cover and my valve cover gasket leaked, but i just kept adding oil. thing ran like a charm. I even ran it about a quart low on several interstate trips (im away at college) and it still takes all the abuse i could dish out.:12dunno that's pretty reliable as far as im concerned. i want a 7th gen accord v6 coupe for my next honda. or maybe that motor and tranny in a 6th gen :happyfing

Yea, I think the asking price on both of them is a little high. I picked up a 93 coupe last year for $400 really nice shape except paint, and had #1 rod knockin put a motor in it now runs fine. A month ago I got a '91 hatch with a blown headgasket for $400 put a $500 motor in it, now runs good. And be sure to check the frame rails, and look where the spare tire is. Also look behind the licence plate to check for rust. I would prolly not go with either at that price even if they had no rust. Putting a motor in a 240 is super easy, if you know anything about cars at all. Goodluck tho.

:eek4: wow that's some rip off prices. i got a '95 S14 w/ 153k miles for $2500 and it runs like new. i got a good price for it i guess but here's the most i'd pay for each car you described.

92 with 164k and options i'd say is worth 2000-2200 MAX.
93 with 112k and no options i'd say it's value should be similar but no more than 2500 tops. also, are these in canadian dollars? b/c if so, that sounds more realistic. also, if i had to choose between each one, it really depends on how each car was maintained. the one with fewer miles might have been abused (like a rental car) but the 164k might have been very well taken care of. either one of the cars seem good though, just go with the one that runs better and has a cleaner body/interior.

I am so very jealous of the select you have south of the border.

I looked at the 1993 for 4500(firm) and it was trashed. Strut towers up front were rusted out, major frame rot, stereo gutted, numerous dings, dents, paint missing, different rims front and rear, bald tires. It was a disaster for what they were asking.

I then went to check out another one that I wasn't originally planning on checking out. They were asking $5880 before taxes and other charges. It's a red fastback, power everything, no hicas, small spot of rust under the spoiler, but otherwise immaculate inside and out. 136,000 miles on it, new performance tires, new suspension, fresh clutch. I got it for 4268 which works out to $5150.

I'll take some pictures tommorrow.

I know people are going to reply with "you got ripped off, I got mine for free + $50" but I don't think we got very many S13s in Canada and I have yet to see an S14 on the road. I am happy with my purchase, I got a beautiful vehicle with all the options I wanted for a price I was prepared to spend.

Another bonus my insurance was only up $7 a month over my jeep cherokee. Thats with fire, theft, vandalism, glass, collision, etc.:thumbsup

I have a ka24e with 143000 and it just started knocking but still runs like new id go with the no power otions and to insaini I had a 95 civic hatch it ran great uo untill 330000 the it blew but I always ran the piss out of it so I did a d16 swap anf traded it for my 240

It all depends on how you take care of the car. MY car, 92 240sx...over 230k
only problem with it was a bad a MAF which is very common thing in 240sx's. It also ran for about a month on very low oil....Still runs fine, hopefully the SR swap will come in soon

I'd probably go for the one with less Km. on it, but it does totally depend on how hard the cars have been drivin. Power options are very nice to have, i sometimes wish i had A/C smetimes.
If you are buying from a dealership like nissan or honda for ex. the cars should be in relatively good shape. because if they aren't, most dealerships just pawn crappy cars off to used dealerships. So if it is a used car dealership I'd be very careful about the car, I've had a bad experience with a used car dealership. But I've had a good one too, when i bought my 240. Ive had very few problems with it it has 220Km. As for the price, in Canada those are reasonable price, if u get your asking price i bet you could re-sell them after 5 years for pretty much the same price u bought it.

any ways good luck with what ever car you buy.
