I couldnt find it on here I found it on phase2motortrends site but no pictures. So I thought I would share.

How to set your timing to 15*

1. Remove coils and valve cover.

2. Set motor to TDC its the second tic from the left and your 1st cylinder cam lobes will be facing away from each other.
Image

3. Remove the cas. You will see two dots on the gear and a mark on the shaft. (see picture)

4. Line up the dot on the right with the mark on the shaft.

5. push the cas all the way in. When you press it in the gear will rotate and the mark on the shaft should line up with the dot on the left now. It might be a little bit off rotate the cas to line up the mark with the left dot.

6. Tighten up the cas and recheck the marks line up. Your cas should be aligned to 15* now.
7. Put the valve cover and coilpacks back in.

Again this information was taken from the www.phase2motortrend.com faq page I just took pictures and put the information on here.

I think this should be added to the FAQ section.

This has been very helpful to me. However, on Heavy Throttle's website it says:

Problem Runs OK, but no power
Check Check timing, set to 15 degrees, 2nd mark from the right on crank pulley.

They say 2nd mark from the right, not 2nd from the left like you. I used your method, is this correct?

If someone removes the Crank pulley say and does not put it back on in the exact same spot then going by the marks on the pulley would not be correct.

So the proper way I suppose would be to actually remove the Valve Cover to make sure that the #1 cylinder cam lobes are facing away from each other and then set the CAS ?

Mine are still facing away from each other no matter which mark on the crank is used. My question is, should they be facing exactly away from each other or is it more important to go by the mark on the crank? And yes add this to the FAQ.

ive heard another way to set timing is to remove the Coil off the #1 Cylinder plug and use one of the KA wires and attach one end on the spark plug and the other end on the Coil. Use a timing light and turn the CAS to set the timing. I havnt tried this at all but another SR20 owner i met last week told me how to set timing this way. Sounds like it could work but has anyone here tried it that way.

the second tick on the right is 15* the second tick on the left is top dead center. :)

After you set your timing this method and go to check it your light should light up the 15* tick. The second from the right.

also you dont have to use a spark plug wire to set your timing with a timing light. On the sr20det there is a wire at the back of the engine on the coil wiring harness that has a wire loop sticking out of it you can connect your timing light around that and it will work just fine.

I dont know about your cas but mine only rotates. If you follow the directions there is no way you can mess it up. I will get a picture of the loop tomorrow morning.

Just a quick qestion? Did you read the directions? If you did you would see there is two dots on the cas that you have to line up... I dont mean to be rude but everything you need to know is in the directions above. Its possible the cas could be a little off but this should set you rite on 15*

by sliding up and down i meen rotating.

yea, im talking about the position changes when u rotoate the CAS while the notch is in. that affects the timing also. Don't you need a timing light to set the position of the CAS after it is in the correct notch? moving it all the way to one side VS the other changes the timing a good bit... enough to break up at top end atleast.

I would reccomend using a timing light after your done if you dont feel that you did it rite. I used this method on my car and checked it afterwards to find out it was perfect on 15* I ask you to read the directions again. If you read step #5 it says to line up the dots after you put it in. Also this is mostly for people whos timing is way off or on a new install its a good way to check timing on an engine that wont start.

Can you post up that picture of the loop? Im gonna be raising the boost of my car this weekend and i want to check the timing since someone brought to my attention that the timing may be off.

I guess ill add some info

reading from left to right on the crank pulley facing the motor -5,0,5,10,15,20

timing 15, top dead center 0

Hook up your gun to the loop that goes back into the harness and not the ground

When using a timming gun, your suppose to let the car idle for a little while, then shut it off and unplug the tps sensor. Restart the car and hook up the timming gun to check your timming.

i seriously could have used this info about 4months ago instead of paying for the shop to time my motor :( but on the brightside i have a metal headgasket
