Interference engine, timing and MAF

Is the SR20 and interference engine (Ie. If the timing chain breaks do the pistons slam into the valves)?

Also, is there a way to check timing on a SR motor, I am used to pulling out the timing light clipping onto the first cylinder’s spark plug wire and shoot the crank pulley?

Were there different versions of the MAF? I got my motor complete except for a MAF, I bought one off of ebay and the connector from my harness does not fit the MAF connector. I am working on getting a picture of it but it has 4 connector spots and only 3 tabs inside of it, which match up to the connector, but the plastic housing does not fit.

I keep hearing people swear that our car is a non-interference engine, HOWEVER, I am almost positive it is an interference engine. I have never taken an SR apart, so I couldn't tell you first hand, but I'm sure someone here has.

And about the MAFS, you have a SOHC mafs. It will work, but you have to shave off the side that doesn't have a pin sticking out. Basically take a hacksaw and cut off the plastic wall right after the 3rd pin.

I dont know about the belt drive engines being non-interferance. It may be true for Nissan, but i know that that does not hold when it comes to toyota engines. Just my experance??

Yes in general belt = interference, chain = non-interference. However this is not always true as once again I believe the KA and the SR are both interference.

I know from my expeirance with vw's that the 8 vale engines aren't and the 16v engines are. they are both belt driven. as for the ka and sr, ?

I know Honda's are belt driven and are definetely interferance. Same with Dodge Neon's. The Toyota 22-R is a chain driven motor and it is interferance. I know the old Stanza's are chain driven and are also interferance. It varies from motor to motor usually. It doesn't really have much to do with wether or not it has a chain or a belt.

I am almost ashamed to admit, but i worked on the a 93 Protege with the 1.8L DOHC. It is a belt, and a non-interference. I know this because we had the timing belt on all wrong to the point where you could hear the lack of compression due to the intake valves being open during the compression stroke, and all the valves are fine.

I think it depends on the particular engine more than anything else.
