KA24DE vs. 4G64

I was wondering why the KA24DE engine is widely known and hailed in modding while the very strong (14 psi on stock internals) 4G64 isnt. Only a handful of guys make a turbo kit (max-revv, dougs dyno)..while the KA24DE has a strong base with many turbo kits and thousands of mods?

Lets have a little quiz -no google or any other search engine. Who made the 4G64, what is its displacement, and what car uses it (trim/years/and drive orientation). Lets see if you Nissian guys know your stuff.

I owned a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS - 4G64. Many people said they arent reliable...but I gotta say from personal experence that they are. I had zero problems with mine...at 60,000 miles compression was at stock spec, oil filter had no metal build up, tranny was perfect (except for the clutch slave cylinder), and the car drove wonderfully.

This pic is when I just got the car and cleaned the engine bay...and you can see the sparkplug wires...

You also forgot that the 4G64 was used in the Eclipse Spyder from 98 - 99 in the RS/GS trim.

Wheres my cookie? :thumbsup
no, it wasn't
that was a 420a in the 95-99 nt models eclipse/talon and cloud cars, neons, etc, etc.
some of the 1g non turbos' are n/a 4g63's or the 1.8 liter (don't know engine code)

I dont think anyone knows what the engine code for the 1.8 liter in the first gen is....not really important.

4G63s have a stock compression ratio of 8.5:1 if I remember correctly....so I think they gotta be turbo or they dont make any power.

no, they came in mighty max pickups also along with n/a 1g dsm's. . The n/a versions had 9.5:1 compression iirc.

btw i'm turboin a 4g64 soon for my friend. We aren't gonna go the 4g63 head on it

what turbo are you gonna use? GT-25s are supposed to be highly rated on the 4G64.

Pretty much all of my automotive knowledge is under that engine...or maybe just mitsubishi engines by themselves. Im trying to branch off and learn about nissian next. Hence, what Im doing here....Im hoping to pick up a 240SX. Ive never driven a RWD before...but Ill learn.

No one's really answered the question. What makes the KA24DE superior over the 4G64?

as a side note......the ka24de is not that widely known, has good support but i wouldnt say excellent, and far from thousands of mods....heh oh yeah which would lead me to say that it isnt hailed in modding....just saying....i dont know too much about mitsubishi motors but im willing to bet the head doesnt flow too well, which is probably why it didnt get much play.....but its not like the ka24de could benefit from some good headwork as well

Yea...alot of people switch heads to the 4G63 head -also cause its DOHC. Well surely the 240 has an engine that is hailed....I havent really done my research yet but Im guessing its the SR20DE...there are alot of products floating around for you to grap if you have the right engine.

I guess you could argue back and say the 4G63 was (and is) hailed...but buying a preturboed car kills the fun. Everyone knows if a GST or GSX pulls up to you you're gonna lose (if you have a 2.4 NA). If I had my eclipse tho and turboed it, no one would expect an asswooping.

the 1g 1.8L engine code is 4g37...lol. i, reluctantly, admit i drive one but i love the 35 miles per gallon it definitely helps when saving for a 240.

the sr20det is the 240sx engine that gets all the glory. the ka24de/e is really just gaining popularity as people realize that is can be a pretty stout engine when turbocharged.

on a 4G64 15psi makes about 230 fwhp (up from 130s) just as a reference. I thinkt thats a pretty respectable gain. I think one of the main reasons that the eclipse RS/GS isnt modded that heavily is because it is heavy. One of the things on my to-do list was put a lighter and smaller gas tank, carbon fiber a bunch of stuff (painting over the cf finish to put it to sleep), and to replace my radiator with a lighter aluminum one.

My ex-girlfriend had a 95 na eclispe and it was not reliable at all in the shop 8 times in the first year she had it.
I thought they came with Chrysler engines in them.

the lancer engine is a 2.0L 4g93 (sohc), my girlfriend has one and it has been very reliable. the lancer evo's are also 2.0L, but they have the 4g63 (dohc).

also, you'll find mitusbishi engines is a lot of chrysler's current cars due to their relationship, but they dropped the dsm tag a while ago. i believe it is the mitsubishi v6 that they put in some of the newer chryslers (stratus?, intrepid?). anyway it has the same silver valve cover.

Ok guys. To stop the confusion. I have a 98 Eclipse GSX. The 2.4 ltr 4G64 was used in the (97-99) N/A Spyders. The 2.0 4G63 is used in the 90-99 Turbo eclipses. It runs 14 psi stock on the T-25 turbo. Engine internals can handle abou 400-500 whp without fixing the bottom end. So it's a beast. Not to mention this thing gains horsepower like ther'es no tomorrow. The N/A Eclipses 90-94 used 1.8 ltr engines. 95-99 N/A used Chrysler's 420A, which is also used in the Dodge Neon, etc. Yes, it's a piece of shit. Unreliable? That's a stereotype. Crankwalk? Sterotype. This is the most reliable car I have ever had. It's all about maintenance people. Hope this helped.
