K so ive been trying to figure this problem out for a while and im very tempted to buy just a new head. Right now when my car is running its making a fairly loud ticking noise. It sounds like a valve but im not sure. I have heard it could be my lifters so i checked them when my engine was a bit warm. Two of the exhaust rocker arms had some play but everything else was fine. Any suggestions? could you possibly fix this without taking the whole head off?

I have a thread open on litterally this exact same thing right now... Which i only strated because i belive my problem is a bit bigger.

Things to try:
- Fist off, remove your cam cover and set the inital timing to TDC on the crank pully and the cam sprocket. THEN check for play in the rocker arms. If they are compressed in your wont be able to tell they are not being bled out properly.
- - - - - Google
- Check oil level
- Oil change..... Play around and find the oil that best suits your motor. Ka's, especially ka24e's are very oil sensitive, so be careful messing with very thin oil or very thick oil... Try and find a happy medium. If you let the motor go too many revolutions with too thick or too thin oil you will start to hear some nasty noises and get some nasty suprizes. Nissan says it to take 20 minutes at 1000 RPM's to succesfully bleed your rocker arms of the air. I have noticed if the oil velocity is helping, you will hear a drastic improvment a few seconds after start up, and it should slowly start to die down. Also, head to the nissan dealership closest to you or get on courtesyparts.com and get some OE oil filters for the Ka24E. I don't care what anyone says.. They help ALOT with overnight oil starvation of the upper end and while driving.
- Check oil pressure
- Try some lifter and engine cleaner's (Go with seafoam first, then try that mystery oil) The bottle's explain how to use them and there are actually write ups (wow) on how to sea foam a 240sx... DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR WITH THESE IN YOUR ENGINE. If you say, well this guy did it and his motor is fine... It's your motor and by all means do what you want.

Now, if you discover your oil pressure is below 10PSI at start up and below 30 PSI at OT (Operating tempeture) you know the sorce of your problem. If those fancy engine cleaners do not work, check for leaks around all the oil seals and such. If non are present your oil pump is going out. Replace with a L28et (Nissan/datson 280Z turbo) oil pump (Direct bolt in with no further modifications needed, although i would reccomend going with a bigger, nastier pump/dizzy sprocket.) That should solve your problem for a long time. If not, there is a leak in the system and it is time for a rebuild.

If all else fail's... Feel free to give me a PM with ANY questions you may have. I will do my best to answer them, and can also explain and help you try and understand why your engine is making those noises.

Check the clearance of the rocker cutouts as well. (the black things that keep the rocker from moving on the shaft) I had one with a lot of play causing the same sound as a stuck lifter.
