KA24E Won't Rev Past 5500 rpm

I'm new to the 240 world, and have a question or two I could use help with. I just bought a 89 240sx se fastback and it will not rev past 5500 rpm in any gear, or in neutral. Also, above ~3000 rpm it feels fairly sluggish. It still pulls, but feels choked up. Maybe it's just me, as I'm not used to the torque-rich KA24E(last car was a 200SX SE-R[SR20DE] which needed to be revved pretty high before it would pull hard). I've searched and found a possible cause may be the tranny sensors, but I haven't found any fixes that are specific to the SOHC, and from what I have read people with single cams that remove the tranny sensors are then limited to 80mph. The car came with a brand new fuel filter in the trunk. Could it be that the filter is clogged to the point of starving the motor for fuel above 5500 rpm? I am not getting any check lights, and have not yet run the ecu diagnostic, but was hoping someone else had experienced similar symptoms and could chime in. Any help would be appreciated.

Also, there is smoke coming from the motor when it is revved. If I manually open the throttle body while the motor is running, it will emit a small amount of smoke from the intake side of the motor when the revs are falling back to idle(almost like a BOV, but with smoke instead of noise). It does not smoke at idle, nor does the exhaust smoke excessively. I am unfamiliar with the KA24E specifically, but my first suspicion was that the EGR might be venting exhaust gas to the atmosphere rather than back into the intake manifold. Any ideas as to what may be causing the smoke, or how I might fix it?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Where does the smoke from the intake come out at. Sounds like a pretty obvious intake leak. Your computer gets it's info from the sensor just after the filter, if any air leaks into the intake track after that the computor is getting false info on how much fuel the incoming air needs, ie not enough fuel will be sent to the injectors. Fix your intake leaks.

same with me

Ok i have been having the same problem but my speedometer doesnt work and the rev limiter hits as 5500 in 3rd, 4700 in 4th, and 3650 in 5th it does seem like it wont do over 80 i cant tell because i dont have a speedometer but i have read around and i have heard that the speedometer has worked for people when the speed sensor has been unhooked but that just doesnt sound right to me due to that fact that the only way your ecu knows how fast your going is because the speedsensor but i have to replace my radiator this weekend and fix my rattling heat shield and check to see if the speed sensor thing makes any difference.
