Alright so I am buying a 1998 240sx. I am going to keep this car until I die. One of the main things I want to do is an engine swap. LS1 or RB25DET? I want to race it , drift, you name it. In your opinion what seems to be the best idea? :questionmark:

Honestly, man, there really is no replacement for displacement. LS1 or even an LS2 all the way. You'll have on-hand torque and they are actually very very reliable motors. The people here who say it isn't a reliable motor are just speaking out of their ass. I've seen an S13 with an LS1 with only basic bolt ons (meaning intake/exh/headers) and a tune run in the low 11's. an RB would be sick, but everyone here needs to consider that this motor is EXPENSIVE to work on! Imagine boring out and building an LS block?! Well, you'll be in the 8's-9's (with traction of course! ;) )

If you really had the money, I would get an LS1, build the block, then twin turbo it! Hahaha, but that's only a dream for a lot of us 240 guys! :D

Your car will also sound D-I-R-T-Y sexy! PROOF?!

So, IMO, hands down, LSx!

Something I haven't seen asked... Is the 98 240 going to be your only car after you sell the Cobalt? Keep in mind that with either of the swaps you mentioned, your car will be down for weeks, literally, especially if you've never done one before. You will absolutely need to purchase another daily driver, unless, say, you're a teenager and your parents are paying for room, board, parts, and letting you drive an extra car they might have. It's awesome you have the ambition that you have for the 240, but stay as realistic as possible. The WORST thing is to run out of money halfway through the project, stuck with an empty engine bay, half the parts you need for the swap, and a slow KA motor that you REALLY don't want to put back in but find out that life says you have to.

Also, with crossbrand swaps like the LS1, you're talking custom -everything- from the differential input flange forward. Driveshaft, transmission, transmission mating to engine, motor mounts, interior shifter fit, and on and on and on. LS1 motors are reliable and torquey and fun, but if you're trying to pay absolute bottom dollar, you will most likely be getting one from a 13-year-old Camaro which will have garbage compression and most likely require a teardown and buildup with new stock parts. Theres another big chunk of change and time.

And for my personal $.02, I have no awe or respect for a small car that has a huge motor but looks like crap. Please make sure you have enough money to polish everything up when you're done, INCLUDING the motor and engine bay! What good is having an LS1 in your 240 if you can't show off your work? If you finish an LS1 swap, I would love to admire it! But if it's an eyesore when you're done, I won't give it a second glance.

Good luck!

Yea its my only car at the time. I know that whatever engine I chose it will be awhile before everything is done. Yes I am paying for everything. I paid for the car, etc, etc. My choices are s14 kouki black top sr20DE,
RB25DET, or turbo the KA. But feist I will take care of other things.

Yeah, a project like this is an ongoing thing. You'll never be done, but you can get to a place that's almost done when you can actually enjoy driving it and it's reliable. I'm there right now with my KA-T and I'm not sorry at all that I decided to T the KA. I've "Been there, done that" with SR20DET's in FWDs and I wanted to something different.

It's probably a toss up money-wise between doing a KA-T and doing an SR swap. Each project will have it's own set of problems to solve. I'm actually thinking it might be cheaper by just a little bit to do the swap. Anything else will cost more $$.

listen heres what you do.

get a rb. i have a 20 and i never regret it(and never will) you can find anything for this engine. and with a fsm it's easier than sex to work on..

iam not one to crossbreed(humans or cars) do you see f-body owners swapping in the rb?? the skyline engines(all of them) are excellent there great. so great there only in japan(like all the other cars that kick ass). but if you want a ls1 you should buy a ls1 car.

you should stick with a "nissan" engine. this isn't a fucking hunda. stick a rb in it and kick some domestic ass!!

i think the ls1 is a sweet swap im contemplating on doing that or the rb25 as well. Ive seen an s13 with the ls2 and that thing was quick. i do believe the rb25 will be less money to get into the car and running. (just helped a friend put an rb25 in his s13) but the ls1 in California where i live, will be street legal.

i dont know why you people hate on LSx, says who a covette isnt reliable?

ls1 is about 7000, you get 300+ na power at wheels , now days most people from sr rb are droping ls1 into their 240

no matter how much power you make from a rb or 2jz , you cant never turn as good as a ls1, it only weights 550 with t56 6sp

that tranny can sure take beats, its used in a aston martin, if you say ls1 is not reliable, a bare engine is only like 2000, one breaks down get another one for cheap

ls1 swapped s13 gets 30 mpg, can a rb25 2jz do that? they make 50-100 less hp and heavy as hell

most important thing is ls1 would be the only one thats even possible to be legal in cali, some rx7 guys got ls1 bar'd

dont you see, a rb is gonna cost the same or more , when it comes to build and swap they require more time and skill, you will make less power for same amount of money

ls1 can easily make over 400hp at wheels, with just bolt on , exhuast and cams and gets awsome mpg for a daily , no lag like turbo cars

rb and jz is too heavy

maybe people with real exp can chime in
