i know what you mean, although they are using the intercooler from the mazda parts bin, they could have made it look more suitable for the hole in the front fascia. I am not suggesting a larger intercooler, because this car only runs a 7 psi and a larger intercooler will hurt the car in the long run, ie pressure drop. (i believe) It looks like mazda was stuck, they couldn't do side mount because it would be restrictive to the air flow and they decided that their only option was to put it dead in the middle.

it was a no win situation.

$25.5k

"Today Mazda unveiled the Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It is the tenth new model for Mazda in 12 months. The Mazdaspeed Miata has 1500 different parts compared to the base version. Under the hood is the well-known 1.8-liter engine that got revised heads and the assistance of a turbocharger to generate 178 hp at 6000 rpm, up 25 percent from the normally aspirated Miata. New is the use of ball bearings instead of floating bearings for the turbo.

The turbo engine generates 166 lb-ft of torque at 4500 rpm (up 33 percent) and is teamed to a six-speed stick shift transmission. Furthermore this Miata has a different differential and a tuned suspension. The car has been lowered 7 mm and The Mazdaspeed Miata will go on sale in the spring and is priced at $25,500 with cloth interior and $26,200 with a leather interior."uses 17-inch wheels and high-performance Toyo tires."

A little bit Off Topic, but...I want one of these:

I've heard there are no plans to sell them in the US...why? I want one. It removes the biggest thing I dislike about the Miata (convertible top) and it probably has more headroom which is another problem I have with the regular Miata.

I love it. :yummy

ah yes the mazdaspeed miata that I announced somewhere here last year :heyhey 25,500k may sound steep for some of you guys but u have to consider the fact that no one has a car in this market sector. This is only around $2,500k more than the typical mr2 and the fact is turbo miatas can go against some of the best handling cars on earth. Get a boost controller and boost it to 12psi and you'll have almost wrx power in a car weighing in roughly 2300lbs. An evo is practically a $30k car, it's msrp is not that of a wrx. You can't get one for 26k, thats below msrp. Miatas and mr2's are knowhere near intended to go head to head with an evo, thier in practically a market of thier own. Let me tell ya a non turbo miata is quick enough and gives u an experience that makes u feel like ur connected to the road, a turbo miata that has practically no lag and even better suspension is just plain sick. Test drive even a normal miata from a dealer er somethin, you'll see what i mean.

I totally agree. Buying any brand new car period isn't your best bet as we all know. A used miata is by far the best bang for your buck. They are usually garaged kept and driven seasonal with extremely low mileage.

The compression ratio on the years below '01 are of 9.5:1 which is absolutley perfect for forced induction. With the saved money you could buy a rollbar, hardtop, turbocharge it to 12psi with a nice fmic and buy racingbeat goodies. Even being a roadster the chassis is still stiffer than alot of other cars, it has to be for it to handle that good. The softop is folded down and kept in the car while the hardtop practically snaps-on, stiffens the chassis even more and turns the car into a coupe, when summer comes it's a simple matter of snapping it off and reaching back to pull that softop over your head. A rollbar bolts onto the chassis of the car and provides more rigidity and protection. The car comes equipped with several underbody braces to begin with. Just some info since alot of people think roadsters are still the same they were back in the days.

Oh yeah turbo miatas have been sold in mazda dealers of austrailia for years. Coupes have been sold in europe and japan is just now getting them.

i went to the detroit auto show and saw this car in person.

IMO not to bad, and i think the intercooler is just fine where it is, its tucked away far enough. I think just seeing the intercooler in pictures makes it lunge out at you or as the focal point for your eyes

Yes the intercooler is small. But i have faith that the Mazdaspeed engineers knew what they were doing when they picked that intercooler. For those of you complaining about the price, don't you think the car would be even more with a larger intercooler. For the money, I think I would take this over a base RX-8 GT (27,500) and invest the $2k I save in a bigger down pipe, lighter flywheel, and an intake, none of which should voild the warrenty.

Cool car but I think for the money, I'd rather buy a used Miata and do something to the motor or swap in a different one (rotory or 302).

where would u expect the intercooler to be????, the fact hat its not gigantic shows that its stock they intend people to strat drag racing this thing off the bat.....its a really nice car though, i was reading about it, 175 hp, around the same tq...real nice
