If you're "sort of a mechanic lol", then you should know what a lot of possible problems are on a 21 year old car.

Otherwise, look through the forums of what people are breaking and asking for help on.

well duh lol i mean more so like somthing strange the car is known for doing that somebody not used to looking at it wouldnt be able to pick up on lol

The rings are a big one. Wear out over time and let oil seep in, causing exhaust smoke.

SOHC Issues:

Timing chain guide
Oil pump fatigue
Broken or brittle vac lines. There's a good amount of them.
Check the driver side strut tower for rust. If you have rust fix it asap. This can lead to a totally screwed strut tower if left alone.
Other than that, just do a good tune up.

rust is one thing, make shure that shit ant there. cause its bad. and the motors suck nutsack if you abuse it. its called rod knock. its gonna happen. especially if you run the motor.
