Can anyone tell me Nissan's recommended oil grade for the KA24DE (s13)? Thanks.

Last summer I worked at a quicklube and I will tell you I will NEVER use penzoil or quakerstate. It's only mobil or mobil 1 for me.

I run royal purple 10w30 in my car. I love the oil. The engine revs a bit faster, had a small power gain, and a slight increase in miladge. Damn good stuff if your willing to drop the money. I've never tried mobil one but I've heard nothing but good things.

We always joked that if you wanted your engine to blow up.....put some penzoil in it. Penzoil does more marketing than anything else and the quality is substantially lower than most. I've poured 5w20 in a motor and stood in awe as one quart was nearly black and the other was clear.... Some of the other manufacturers "errors" we're not allowed to say ...considering I still work there on breaks. To put it this way you can get a better product for the same $

SRs actually have rocker arms.KA24DE is direct cam on bucket.I dont see what's so "hydraulic" about the valvetrain. On the KA24E it's pretty obvious
Have you pulled the cams out of a Ka24de? That "bucket" is a hydraulic lifter. Its not a solid follower that use shims to set the lash. The follower expands with oil pressure to take up the lash, hence the term hydraulic.

Oh yeah, and back on topic, I use 15w50 Mobil1 exclusively.

sorry to bring back the dead...but the de is a shim in bucket style valve train. there is nothing hydraulic that I can see about it. It goes something like this
cam lobe
shim
bucket
retainer
spring
valve

the shim is what takes up lash, use different shims to add or take away tolerance. You can buy different thickness shims from nissan.

If you pull the cams out, and you pull the bucket out, and then pull the shim off the top of the bucket...there isnt any oil passages. I cant see how this is hydraulically adjusted.

What I am missing about this? please someone fill me in

If you look in the owners manual you will find that Nissan recommends 5w-30.
I've had my oil changed at a Nissan dealer in two different states and they both used 5w-30 Mobil non-synthetic.

this is exactly correct.. it's a shim/bucket style valve train.. and if you wanna argue that the valve shims adjust themselves hydraulicly, I'll give you the # to the machine shop that's got my head right now.. SHIMS ARE USED TO ADJUST VALVE LASH ON THE KA24DE HEAD!!

thank you Kenny. I knew I wasnt crazy. The voices in my head told me so!!

no problem..

1bad240SX wasn't entirely wrong.. but what he didn't get right was when he said that it uses oil preasure to move the buckets up to adjust valve lash.. which may be true on SRs, but on the KA it is not.. valve lash is adjusted by different sized shims.. if it was hydraulic, I'd have had my head back today, instead of having to wait untill they finish my lash adjustment after just doing some mill work, resurfacing, and doing a valve job.. he said lash adjustment takes a while because you have to install, and remove the cams several times to ensure they've got the right size shims in each bucket.

Recently bought an 89 240sx coupe. Doesn't have mods or anything. Has 229k miles though and I'm trying to make it last by the end of summer. Just wanting to know what oil I should use for its longest life for now. Nothing's wrong with it but I am kinda beating on it(even though I shouldn't lol) it's just a fun car to drive. And I live in Texas.

says on the owners maunel but im assuming your engine is old and beat up and prob leaking a little so i would run some thicker oil im running Valvoline 10w40 full sythetic on my 203k KA and it runs amazing but i dont think the brand matters that much id pay more attention to the SAE viscosity gradings
