i was searching on ebay and noticed a r31 rb20det. the engine is only 699 dollars which is a considerable amount less then a r32 rb20det. im assuming one of the downsides of this engine is its age but are there any others? how does it stack up performance wise to a r32 engine? im in the process of researching but i was wondering if anyone knew info off hand?

thanks!

yea, redtop (r31) and silvertop (r32)

RB20DET red top
1986-1987: 178bhp (NICS version)
1988-1989: 190bhp (ECCS version)
RB20DET silver top
1989 onwards: 214bhp

Spend a few more and get silvertop if you decide to get one. Its a bit newer and has 35hp more give or take.

redtop rb20's suck, period.
dont buy it wiring is totaly different and its going to be old as crap.
no aftermarket support and you will be out whatever money you spent on it as no idiot would pay for any parts off of it.

The seller is just as stupid, who the hell does he think he's gonna sell it too?! Maybe parts for Japanese only! I love how Carl is so brutally honest, its nice to have around hahaha

They came in fairlady z 200zr's too. I suppose if some one wanted to restore or "make" a z31 200zr, they would want to buy that motor. As far as 240 swaps are concerned, they are completely worthless. r32 - r34 motors were built relatively the same and all have good tuning potential. I'm sure the redtop could probably make 250-300 whp, but it would not be worth it compared to an r32.
