RB20 clip pricing?

On one of the sticky posts here it says the RB20 engine is cheaper than the S13 redtop. Does this pricing hold true for the entire clip? The reason I ask is that my local tuner shop had me pay a $3,200 deposit for an SR20DET clip and when he went to the warehouse in a neighboring city he says that they made a mistake and didn't have the SR20DET in stock so they offered him the RB20 clip for the same price. His claim is that this was roughly a $1,000 discount. At the time it sounded great, because I've read on here before that the RB20 swap is a bit "cooler" than a standard SR20DET. However, after reading the sticky post and doing some searches on the internet I'm a little concerned?

I've seen the clip priced around $1,950 on other sites (w/o shipping).

Am I being over charged for this clip? He is throwing in some extra equipment, such as an intercooler and a custom 3" pipe. The labor cost seemed nominal and I'm fine with that, but this last minute change of plans has me a bit confused.

Any help is appreciated. I plan on inquiring with the shop tomorrow, but I don't want to be confrontational if this is a reasonable price for the clip. I'm not trying to pinch pennies, but $1,000+ difference in cost seems odd.

Thanks.

well i'd say that you got ripped considering i did my entire swap for just over 3k. i payed $2100 shipped for my clip which included all of the stock parts including gauge cluster, smic & piping, and downpipe. the clip was only $1500 but shipping from venus auto in cali was almost 600

no, not at all. i'm not even sure that they made rb20's in 98, i thought they went to the 25 by that point but someone please correct me if i'm wrong. also, even if they did it would be the same turbo. they all came with ceramic ball-bearing turbo's. just tell the place you want your money back and take your business to a more reputable seller.

He had explained that 1998 was the last year they made the RB20. I appreciate this feedback. Can you tell me if there are any differences between the older model RB20's and the newer versions? If the turbo is the same, and two engines had the same mileage, what else could be different?

Are there any additional parts in a clip that could increase the cost?

bottom line call BBB on his ass and get your clip somewhere else where its pleasure to do business like Jarco / heavy throttle ( cant remember other places right now )

if you're actually wanting an rb20, not an sr like you originally intended then heavy throttle wont help 'cause they dont sell 'em anymore. jarco is an awesome company to deal with though, they'll send you videos of your motor running in japan before they bring it over as well as full compression and leak down testing, etc. venus is alright usually, i got mine from them and it cranked on the first try without even a hesitation but i have heard of people getting shitty stuff from them. however with jarco, i have yet to hear of one person having a bad experience with them.

jarco is top notch clean stuff but then again you pay what you get they charge a little more but its worth it if you ask me i bought over 10 clips in total from them ( i bought clips for my customers from there ) only one had a bad turbo and was replaced with out questions asked

and its true they will send you pics videos of your clip and your clip will come untouched ( all after market stuff will stay on it etc if there is any ) will also let you know if clutch is good or not since they drive all the cars prior to cutting them up

venus is bad in my book i freind that paid for a clip from jarco then a week later they called him with a delay in shipping and he was not ok with it and wanted to back out they refunded his money bought from venus first motor turned out bad they sold him another one at a discount ( not replaced it ) and guess what ? haha the second one turned out bad too and they told him tough luck ( he is a member here as well )

he ended up doing his swap like a year later shoudl have went with jarco from start

Bill Mike and James are a cool team and easy to work with

bottom line Jarco > any other importer

yeah, venus was my last resort and i was very worried about the motor up until it cranked over. i've heard good things and then i've heard horror stories. i dont recommend them to anyone unless you just have to use them. they're at least better than a lot of importers out there but nobody tops jarco.

well from pictures I found on google that dash is from an r32 so it can't be from a 98. http://www.spoilershop.com.au/images/acc/dkits/nissan_skyline_r33_ser1.jpg this is the dash from an r33 and it's easy to see the differences.

according to wikipedia the 98 r34 did have an option to come with a rb20 but it was a non turbo model.
R32 Models:
GXi Type-X - 1.8 L CA18i I4, 91 hp (67 kW)
GTE Type-X - 2.0 L RB20E I6, 125 hp (93 kW, 172 Nm)
GTS Type-X, S, J - 2.0 L RB20DE I6 155 hp (115 kW, 184 Nm)
GTS-25 Type-X, S, XG - 2.5 L RB25DE I6, 180 hp (132 kW, 231 Nm)
GTS-t Type-M - 2.0 L RB20DET turbo I6, 212 hp (158 kW, 263 Nm)
GTS-4 - 2.0 L RB20DET turbo I6, 212 hp (158 kW, 263 Nm) 4WD
GT-R - 2.6 L RB26DETT twin-turbo I6, 280 hp (206 kW, 368 Nm) 4WD also NISMO, V-Spec and V-Spec II variants.
R33 models:
HR33 GTS - 2.0 L RB20E SOHC I6, 130 PS (96 kW, 172 Nm)
ER33 GTS25 - 2.5 L RB25DE DOHC I6, 190 PS (140 kW, 231 Nm)
ENR33 GTS-4 - 2.5 L RB25DE DOHC I6, 190 PS (140 kW, 231 Nm) 4WD
ECR33 GTS25T - 2.5 L RB25DET DOHC turbo I6, 250 PS (184 kW, 294 Nm)
R34 Models:
Gt - 2.0 L RB20DE NEO I6, 140 hp (103 kW)
25 GT, GT-X, GT-V - 2.5 L RB25DE NEO I6, 193 hp (142 kW)
GT-FOUR - 2.5 L RB25DE NEO I6, 193 hp (142 kW) 4WD
GT-T - 2.5 L RB25DET NEO turbo I6, 280 hp (206 kW, 343 Nm)

so provided wikipedia hasn't been fucked with if you have a rb20 with a turbo the newest it could posiably be is from 1993.

Interesting. Aside from the date inconsistency, does there appear to be anything blatantly wrong with the clip? I know the pictures aren't the best, but it looks like the engine compartment is in good shape.

Also, he's doing an automatic to 5sp swap on the vehicle so I'll have the RB20 tranny installed.
