Rear End Noise

hey everyone,

i posted a similar thread at the suspension section, but now i'm posting here because i believe the problem is something else.

my car is at my mechanics. we're tryin to diagnose a rear end noise. the noise is a creaking type of noise. not so much of a clunk. it happens during acceleration from a stop or at very very low speeds. it rarely makes the noise any other time. no noise during bumps or ruff pavement. but it only makes noise over bumps at very low speeds, such as speed bumps or driveways.

as much as i thought it was a suspension issue, my mechanic is pointing me towards the rear differential. he tried to recreate the noise on the lift. he did this by lowering the car enough to touch the ground and put some load on it. he was able to recreate the noise, and so far the only thing he noticed is that there is a lot of play at the rear diff. he said as the rear diff moves (up and down i believe), the noise is recreated.

anyone have any thoughts or similar experiences? can too much play at the mounting points of the rear diff be causing this noise? or can it be the rear diff iself? my car is a 1996 240sx se, 100k mi, only mods are tein flexes and metal subframe collars. noise was present before the mods. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

i have a similar sound at the rear end. its a loud low pitched whine upon deceleration from 45-40mph, which i believe is cause by worn differential bushings. that might point you in the right direction, hope it helps.

that sounds like either the mid drive shaft bearing or the rear wheel hub bearings making that whining noise...The sub frame bushings dont cause that whining noise....Or either your differential needs to be lubed...

i have herd that it might be the sub frame bushing being worn down to the metal and when you decel or accel you cause the frame to hit and other part causing it to make a "pop" noise. my car does the same thing and i just havent been able to get bushing for it or find a good tutorial on how to fix it.

that is simple..You might want to get some sub-frame spacer bushings like the ones with the top spacer that looks like a C allowing you to insert on the top portion of the subframe, right over the bushing...Just get it centered..But the way to drop that rear end would be to remove the screw that holds that shock on the bottom. Should be an 11/16th socket long and the same to remove the 4 different bolts that hold the subframe up...once removed, mind you if you have the differential held up by a floor jack or something, you should be able to slowly drop the sub frame low enought to get the spacers in...Without having to drop the whole thing down...Once they are in..Tighten them up using a breaker bar or something to make sure they are snug and tight as if they are loose..Will cause a wicked vibration in the end...(Very Annoying). But if you tighten right and are in position..Very minimal vibration.

Then the rest is putting everything back together as you took it off..

so my mechanic couldn't pinpoint the origin of the noise. he's pretty much given up on it. he's even tried looking with a stethescope.

anyone know of any nissan specialists in northern california? if not, im gonna have to bring it to the dealers.

thx,
chris

i have the same noise. it almost sounds like the threads on one of the bolts are rubbing on something. i noticed this after i installed the peak urethane subframe bushings, lsd, and ruca's. if you ever figure out what it is let me know. at first i thuoght we didnt tighten down the subframe bolts tight enough but i checked tose and they seem to be tight. so now i am leaning towards it being a bad diff.
