before i get flamed... i searched and couldn't find a specific question. i have a few questions so im going to put them in a list and hopefully you guys can answer them all

  • are red top internals stronger than black top?
  • which is better for extended modifications including the s14 motor(turbo ecu...)
  • why would they switch from a high-port head to a low-port head isn't high-port better?
  • im assuming stock pistons are hyperneumatic?
  • how strong is the stock crank?
  • what kind of modifications are necessary to the transmission for 300-400hp motors?
  • and finally... where can i get rebuild kits for an SR20DET?

thanks

1) They're the same
2) The s13 SR is simpler to modify because there's no Variable Cam Timing or whatever it is, but strength-wise they're the same.
3) High port is better for overall high power, but the low-port with VCT got better idle performance, fuel economy and emissions.
4) I think you mean hypereutectic, and I don't think so, they're just high-grade forged steel.
5) Stock crank has been known to survive 500+hp
6) Redline MT90 or Shockproof Heavy gear oil will be fine to get the stock tranny to those levels. Its usually the driveshaft and axles that are weaker. You do always have the option of going to an RB25 tranny which can hold up to 700 hp or so.
7) Depends on what you want to rebuild? All the bearings are easy find parts and the seals are all shared with the US SR20.

Hope this helps and welcome to the forums!

When I mean rebuild kits I mean like all the engine seals, pistons etc.. or anywhere I could find those parts around here? Is there mailorder for that kind of stuff, like www.summitracing.com for domestics. I haen't checked out their sport compact section in a while but I dont htink its very good.

also, what kind of gas mileage do you guys get w/ a daily driven sr20?

-thanks a lot for the quick reply's

search here and in google (froogle) for rebuild kits, summit won't have them but there are available..

i have always been surprised with the gas mileage out of my sr.. i don't think i have gotten under 30mpg yet, usually around 32-33 or so..

good luck.. and good questions..

the blacktop and the redtop s13 wiring harness are the exact same . I`m running a red top harness on a black top. i gaurentee you they are 100% identical harnesses as long as they are both s13 harnesses. The only real differencebetween the redtop and black top is that the blacktop has a slightly bigger port . thats it. dont listen to what pple post until you have taken the time to research yourself. SEARCH sometime

i think we're all getting confused. When I say black-top, I assume s14 SRs versus red-top for s13 SRs. All the s13 SRs (red-top and black-top) are nearly identical with some said wiring changes, so its easier just to refer to all s13 SR20s as red-tops.

All my previous stuff was said assuming s13 versus s14

when you guys say 25 mpg and 35mpg do you mean street or highway? and mr. 180sx, where do you suggest i "SEARCH?" i've searched on this forum as well as multiple other forums. im still barley getting into imports and my resources are still limited. im not trying ot be a dick i just want to know where i can find some good info.

are they any sites like www.club4ag.com and www.mkiv.com for silvias(with just random articles and info)?
