So guys when I remove power steering and AC I can lose all the accesory belts associated with them correct? Also how heavy is the steering rack on the s13 with out the power steering pump hooked up?

your giong to need to replace the steering rack with a manual one. im not sure who makes a manual rack but can someone chime in on this? as for removing power steering to lose that extra rotational mass is a dumb idea. if your thinking that you'll also 'feel' the road better from taking out the steering rack than good luck, i hope you dont drift.. and please, take the car to an ac place to have them suck up all the CFC's from the AC! we love the ozone layer.

You get used to it, trust me. lol My 240 has never had power steering(well along as I have owned it) and when ever I drive a car with power steering, it just seems unstable.

I have been driving without power steering for a long time and it is not bad at all. The steering feels a lot more solid. You don't need a manual steering rack, just remove the pump, belts, and all of the lines.

Napa V-Ribbed Belt (Its a gates belt)
25 030267
13/32" x 27 3/38" or 11mm x 695mm
That belt is a tight fit so here is the procedure for getting it on.
loosen all the bolts on the crank pulley and leave two on (the top ones), loosen the water pump bolts but leave two on (the bottom ones), then slide the belt on and press the belt on hard while turning the crank. Slowly after maybe 3-5 turns of the crank it will be completely on. then put on and tighten all the bolts. Do a simple test run, see if everything is ok.
Found this a while back somewhere... I'm too lazy to do it

I've been circle track racing a 240 for 4 years, dirt and asphault, with the power steering rack converted to manual. All I did to the rack was take the 2 hoses off the rack and replace them with threaded plugs. The car has been raced by some pretty small girls a few times, they had a little trouble steering it in the pits, but had no trouble on the track. If you're wanting reduced front end weight and improved road feel, do it. If you're trying to gain a few hp, you can spend your time more productively elsewhere.

You don't need a manual rack if you go without powersteering, just plug the rack, and remove the pump. Honestliy steering feel is improved while driving but it's a MAJOR PITA parking, turning around and doing anything at slow speeds. Only reason why I don't have it now is because well I was too cheap and too lazy to go out and buy/find DOHC lines. I do however plan on getting at least PS back. As far as AC? lol in the 7 years I've owned 240's I've never had AC so thats something that is not missed.

The more caster a car has, the harder it is to turn the wheel. If you want less steering effort reduce caster, but you'll lose some straight line stability. There's no easy way to adjust caster on a 240, you can but it's shadetree

this thread is sorta 50/50... and also this car is not an everyday car. Is the car harder to drift with out power steering?

try going out and doiing some hard corners, drifts, and fishtails. now remember how you held the wheel?? its gonna take alot more strength and it'll tire you out. Did you let it spin itself? did you palm it around??

And if youve never been tired out by steering, you should hit up a kart track and race non stop for just even 10 minutes.
I would bet you get better road feel but its a big car for no power steering at normal driveing speeds.

It hurts my forearms :(

if you're going to depower a PS rack, you can't just pull the PS shit and plug the lines. then you leave all the fluid in there, and then when you try and steer, you have to fight with it at low speeds, as well as the tire's friction with the ground.

if you want as little resistance as possible, you have to get all the fluid out, and then, if you know how (which most everyone here doesn't) you can pull the rack apart (via removing a shit ton of parts, like the spring tensioner, adjuster cover, support yoke, locking collar, etc) and grind the collar that pushes PS fluid back and forth in the rack, off. once it is off, grease the steering shaft like hell, put it all back together, and you have a properly depowered rack.

be warned though, it's a bitch of a process.

You're just plain wrong, you do not have to get all the fluid out. leave the fittings off, turn the rack left and right a few times to get out the excess, then install the plugs. I've been racing it 4 years and thats all I did 4 years ago. At first I put a short hose from the inlet fitting to the outlet fitting, later I just plugged both fittings. I'm not a muscle man by no means, the car does steer a little hard in the pits, but once moving at any speed there's very little added effort. Maybe one day when I have a little extra time i'll take it apart and 'do it right' and see if it gets a little easier to steer, but it no problem as it is.

as far as the ac, you can shed of about 50lbs or so, its kinda worth it..
The below components only add up to 29.2 pounds. I have not yet weighed the bracket or the evaporator yet, but would imagine that the two total <10 pounds.

Keep PS for a daily driver. A/C is optional depending on your climate and tolerance for being sweat-drenched. I work a professional job (shirt and tie), and wouldn't remove A/C in my DD in NC.

You never have said how you're going to us this car, all yo've said is it's not a daily driver. If it's a track car, autox, circle track, road race, drift, drag race, or just a fast street car. Everybodies different, i've raced a 77 Nova with a 350 and manual steering, now that was a little difficult, but it forced me to be smooth, and thats good. I really don't understand anybody calling a 240 a big car, I just think some of you guys are spoiled, never drove a car without power steering in you life and think you're going to hurt your delicate little arms.

I have no PS.

I liked it,but when i welded my differential it was a major pain, because it wanted to go straight all the time, and the whole car felt like crap.
So i got an LSD and now i'm happy even more without PS,since i was used to it being even harder with welded diff.

But i still want to get my PS back sometimes...dont know why
