Hey everyone. What a nightmare this car has been lol. Just want to preface by saying that I wouldn’t be posting this if I hadn’t read every single other “bogging issue” post. I’ve got a 1989 240SX SE, automatic transmission.
The problem is that I’ve damn well near replaced every single component in the engine bay, I’ve rebuilt the entire top half of the engine, and the timing should be OEM specs. It took a whole year to get to this point. She was running perfect the other day - smooth as butter - and driving beautifully for a whole 2 days.
Then the 3rd day, on the way home I stopped at a sign and the engine stalled. Had to restart it. Weird on an automatic transmission right? It started and ran, but was bogging horribly to the point the engine was hopping up and down. Idle was rough and very low, going below 1000. Nothing about the engine felt right, it’s like it went right back to how it was before the entire engine rebuild.
I’ve read everywhere I can find on this issue, but the issue is that usually it’s something someone replaced. My problem? I’ve replaced almost everything, and at this point I have no clue what else to do to fix this.
I really don’t want to keep wasting money on parts, I’ve already replaced the spark plugs, injectors, fuel filter, and even the fuel pump 3 times each now. I can’t just keep replacing these things every time an issue pops up, yknow?
If anyone thinks it’s a good idea to buy the parts I listed above, I’ll buy them instantly. But I just want to check if anyone has any other ideas first.

- I’ve rebuilt and resurfaced the head, including the valves, and seals.
- Replaced entire timing chain assembly, including cover
- Replaced oil pump
- Has brand new injectors, spark plugs, plug wires, fuel pump, strainer, and filter
- EGR delete, replaced all remaining vacuum hoses and blocked off any open ports
- Brand new alternator, radiator, fans, air intake, MAF, FPR, coolant temp sensor, belts, pulleys, water pump
- Cleaned out fuel rail and rest of the fuel system
- Replaced every coolant, fuel, and vacuum hose
- Spliced on some new pigtails for the injectors and coolant temp sensor which were confirmed working before this started
- Fuses and battery are all good
- Checked timing: timing chain is properly lined up, distributor and oil pump are properly lined up, and ignition timing is properly lined up
- I also adjusted the screw on the throttle body that advances/retards the idle, and it was sitting at a good spot and everything was running beautifully
