SR20 trouble cold starting

I'm on my second SR motor and this is still giving me problems. Whenever it's cold, I have a bitch of a time starting my car. I crank and crank and it won't bite. When it's warm outside or the car is already warmed up there is no problem. I was assured that it was an intake problem, but I have a new one with my new longblock. What's the problem?

well my friends old SR had the same problem too LOL. I dont think he ever found out what it was, but it shouldnt be anything major.

Not that cold, I'm talking about 55 degrees at lowest cold. The only way I get it started is by holding the pedal to the floor.

how cold you guys talking about here? If it's icey cold then it's normal, but if it's just a cold morning on a regular day then I guess something can be done to fix it.

yea, its was like 50 degrees today, my battery died out cuz some kid left the map light on. so yea, i jus got it recharged, connected, tried starting my car and nothin happend. none of my assesories worked (power windows, radio, etc) but i know theres electricity because the dome light comes on when i opened the door. its done this before in colder weather but i usually hear a clickin noise when i turn the key. solutions?

Mine has problems starting in the cold but that's to be expected in Upstate NY. Do you have a battery relocation? If so then when it's cold out the current that can run through the wire to the front of the car is severly limited and it's an exponential limitation, not linear. So once it starts getting colder, the effect is dramatically increased. I have 4awg wire running for my battery and I couldn't start my car for the month of January. Next summer I think I'm gonna have to upgrade to 2awg at least.

Also everyone I know with an SR, the engine will not run well at all until the engine is warm, if its cold outside. Loopy idle, stalling, shuttering, etc... The engine doesn't like being cold.

NO NO NO.....

all you people with cold starting problems. go to the plug that is just above the ECU on the engine wiring harness...the one that plugs into the dash!!! there is an Orange wire in that plug. make sure it is connected.. that is the startup signal. it tells the ECU that the engine is trying to start. so the ECU pulls out all the timign and adds fuel.

Hmmm... mines connected, and still does it. KA did it also. I think the problem might be you live in Florida and I live in Albany, where it was -48 Degrees w/ wind this winter.

Got the same problem its the idle switch i had the problem on other cars and thats always the problem. But i will ask my mechanic what it is and let you all know

Sounds like the SR's don't like cold weather. It's be nice to know a solution as well because it CAN get cold here in the winter. My 240 won't be a daily but what if I wanted to go play in the snow one day. :thumbsup

maybe that little sensor over on the the drivers shock tower that none of you hooked up has something to do with it? honestly i have no idea why you guys cant start in the cold. i'm on my second sr and i have never had that problem, course i hooked up all the little sensors.

No, I just dropped a black top into my car. It's got 44k on it and it starts in 10 degree weather on the first crank. Installantly. But speaking of cold weather and not starting is false. I'd really check out the sensors. I followed the wiring off SRswap.com's web page and amazingly enough it works properly. The other thing I would check into is proper wiring. I know I had mad issues with my first SR due to poor condition of the wiring harness. I replaced it with another one and it's been flawless till she over heated and blew up. I got the black top and it's been a flawless install except this wierd idle issue. I hope it helps.

side note: I had the wierd idle issue and 10psi vacuum issue.
I replaced the plug to the maf today and it idles semi better but it's idle is still wrong. I will check timing shortly. But it revs way better though. so I think the plug was the semi issue.

check fast idle cam, check that the mark alligns with the pin center of the cam follower lever.

I can't explain where exactly this componant lies in the engine bay because my car is at my friends house and my service manual is like 1500 pages long and in pdf file format on my laptop. The battery is dead and my charger cord is with my car. I should have it tomorrow and then I will look to explain. If you do not have to hold your pedal to start this could very well be the problem. The rest of the trouble shooting is normal things like check your spark, fuel delivery, and sensors CPU's.
