SR20DET vs. RB26DETT

Hey. Granted all my posts involve great heaps of dollars, this one actually is really important to the long life of my car.

Obviously, I'll need a swap, maybe soon.

The SR20 is a big fave with you guys.

But does anyone have any tech info, swap experience, et cetera on a 240sx with the Skyline RB26DETT swap. Apparently you can buy the engine, all parts--less labor--for around $5000, and apparently the swap is very possible.

Anyway, if any mods or the admins have any pros and cons on the matter, or any of you floaters/devotees, have heard anything on this, your replies would be greatly appreciated.

Muchos muchos gracias.

Anything is possible.. but the RB26 swap is gonna cost a lot of money to get done. First you will have to have custom made motor mounts and tranny mounts. You will also have to get the RB25 tranny since it is RWD configuration. Then you will need a custom driveshaft. Also.. the twin turbo setup.. there is no way it will clear the steering column, you will have to convert it to a single turbo setup. A custom downpipe will have to be fabricated to clear the steering column. I'm sure there is a lot more involved but these are the things I can think of off the top of my head. Unstable-hybrids is willing to take on such a project but they are estimating cost at $12000 to $15000.

Exactly what shawn said. It hasn't been done yet, but Unstable Hybrids wants to do one. You will more than likely be w/o your car for a good chunk of time, at least a month, more than likely more though. It'd be an impressive swap, but honestly I'd rather save up and get a skyline if I were going to spend $15k on just the engine.

I have never seen a 26 in a S13. I have seen a 25 in a S14. I have head that you would have to move the firewall back a few inches to fit the RB26. However, that could quite possibly be false. If you did it you would be da' man!

You guys are cute.

Honestly, I guess this pipe dream involves more fedia, and not that many Benjamins sleep in my bank account.

However....
(by the ways and/or my asian connection)

let's say that a Skyline could be possible for import.

What do I face in getting it here? besides the FOB pricetag.

Emissions,
--insert hearty, American laugh when compairing the standards--
Right-wheel,
Bumpers,
et cetera....

The nearest port (from Idaho --laugh, sigh--) is about 500mi.

Your best shot for a skyline would not be to import one with the help of a friend, but to import one via Motorex in CA.

**Edit** Don't get me wrong though, you will spend more than $15k on a Skyline, I just think that if you're willing to spend that much on just then engine, it's worth the extra cash.

I must say a n RB26DETT setup would be nice, but for less money you could put in a Supra 2jz since the exhaust is on the other side of the engine you won't have to worry about streeing column clearance and that would still be a nice setup. Or you could go the route of and slap a rotary in there. You would loose weight and with a properly built rotary loads of HP and an almost unlimited RPM range. Stubby

In the long run it would more than likely still cost equally as much with all of the custom fabrications you would have to do.

You could more than likely buy a Supra or RX-7 for the price you would be paying for that swap.

It has been done before. Someone in florida did an rb26dett swap into his s14 and he went single turbo. I dont know much about it because its totaled now. Ill try and find out more about it but the guy passed away from an accident in the car. I was very curious on this too, and i would like to do it sometime in the future but if too much modification is needed, then it may not happen do to lack of funds.

Damn, I had no idea, from what Unstable had said, it sounded like no one had done it before. If you could find out some info, it'd be much appreciated, I would like to hear about this.

Im gonna go to the shop where i found out about it. The guy that works there has pics of it and told me the guy died the day after the pics were taken. The car flipped and he died. He said the guy didnt have any seat belts, no roll cage, no front reinforcement bars(because he wanted to save weight), airbags, or a harness. The guy was askin for it. He didnt feel like putting the reinforcement bars on after he put the front bumper on. It was a beautiful car but not safe enough.

See everyone wants to put an RB26DETT in a S13 or 14 now what I want to do is put it in my 71' 240Z with a singel turbo setup. Won't have to worry about emissions or any other real worries. Plus the fitment would be easy. Stubby

You people act like putting a RB26DETT is like putting it in a Yugo. You could get by with everything including installation for about $15,000. Then you would have one of the badest cars around. I mean where else can you get that kind of performance for that kind of money?? Stubby

ShaWTiMe, it's cool, just wanted to point out that I didn't mean 40k for the swap because that would be insane.

DLSracing, how so? I think that I'm the only one not really agreeing with putting it in a 240, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't do it. It's just my personal opinion that I'd rather have a full fledged Skyline if I were going to go through all of that trouble. Is it not ok for someone to have a differing opinion than you? IMHO if you had an R34 Skyline GT-R THEN you would have one of the baddest cars around. Most people have never seen a Skyline before so you also get the exoticness of Italian sports cars to go with great performance. I love my 240, but I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't trade it in a heart beat for a Skyline.

Jesse.

(what happened, my old account is gone, or did i just forget my old screen name? looks like it was gone when you changed designs?)

Jesse, someone hacked the system and all the old posts, email, user names, and such were lost.

I just got a new computer and didnt feel like downloading the characters to see that page (its 4 am). Does it say how it was done? Does the firewall have to be moved back or is that hearsay?

It is fine to have your own opinion. It just sounded in the way you posted that it would cost as much as a skyline to do the swap which I knew was way off, but you are right about having the skyline brought over here it would be nice. I would rather have the the 240 with the RB in it the reason being it would be much faster than the skyline and you would have a killer sleeper. I would rather have the sleeper than the skyline... Okinawa Import Motorsports:
http://www.okinawaimportmotorsports.com/2002/parts/engine/main.htm

They claim to be able to get you an rb26dett from an r33 for around $3800 and one from an r32 for around $3500. Includes engine, tranny, ecu, and harness (this is all on their website). They also say "can be swapped into the S13/S14 240SX and 300ZX" so they might be able to help out with the hows involved in the swap. They can also get all the sr20det's. At any rate, it's probably worth checking out if your interested in the swap.

Hey Aubrey,
That link is to a yahoo auction...It doesnt have any info on the swap, i forget the guys name who owns the car...It doesnt 'look' like the firewall has to be moved back by the pics, but i have heard the same thing...I think it could fit, and the radiator support might have to be modified. I know i hear of hood clearance issue's, which are easy to fix i imagine, and they may use a custom Ex. manifold to fit it in an S13 or S14....i think it would be a lot easier project in a RHD car though.

If thats exactly what the website says then i would be extrememly hesistant to bring my car to them considering an R33 never came with a RB26DETT. R33's came with RB25DET single turbo 2.5 liter. The Twin Turbo RB26DETT was available in the R34's. $3500 for a R32 motor (RB20DET) is pretty steep. Price should be under 3K for a RB20.
