Tires that smoke, some that don't...

I have been watching a few drifting videos lately and I was wondering, sometimes when cars drift they just go sideways and make a squealing sound. Other cars smoke the tires a bit, and even some others smoke REALLY bad. I wanted to know what is going on. Is it the car, the hp, the weight? Is it the tire brand, the compound used? I'd think that when I get into drifting I would like to not smoke the tires so much, because if I was to just do it on a certain quick corner near my house, I wouldn't want a lot of trailing smoke calling attention to me. So, can anyone explain what's going on here?

It is not always a power thing. I am making the same power since the car came from the factory and I make tremendous amounts of tire smoke now that my technique has gotten a little more agressive.

That and a 2 way makes for mounds of tire smoke.

I have burnt:
Michelins, kumhos, costco, and brand x. They all frag out.

I think it is more the ability to create wheelspin before and all the way thru a turn. The tires fail and they smoke all day long. Once broken they should stay broken as long as you keep the speed up.

no i dont
i prefer nailing a corner with a good line, high speed and fast exit. clean and precise and in control
whatever happens behind me happens
leave the showy smoke to newbs and entertainers. im more intersted in becoming a better driver rather then the 'woah dood your tires smoke a lot!'

neova ad07 dont smoke much at all. but i'd take those over a very smoke tire

is it impossible to nail a corner with a good line, high speed, and fast exit, and still have a nice trail witchu?
common now

dousan, I'm not asking how to smoke the tires. I'm simply reqesting knowledge of WHY they smoke. I even said in my post that I would much rather not smoke the tires...I'm not all about that flashy attention getting (cop attracting) shit anyway. This is why I'm asking, so that if it is the certain tire compound that is know to smoke, then I know to stay away from it.

i buy tires not based on smokeability but rather grip and quality
Drift is an exhibition sport. Clean lines, High speed, Lots of oversteer, Smoke, Screeching tires, and a Loud exhaust all contribute to the crowd watching you versus someone else. In my experience, here in Japan, the last three are often the most important. They make you LOOK fast, regardless if someone is 2 seconds ahead of you. If you are just worried about going fast gripping is probably the sport for you. But if you are into turning heads and impressing the crowd smoke and sound are very important.

ya but that's competitions and all. i prefer being a skilled driver before being focused on competitions

again, look at the biggest crowd pleaser event: D1.

most use Neova AD07 (many of the big winners) not a heavy smoking tire but great on control.

the biggest smoker is Nomuken w/ the DZ101 or FM901 (i think DZ101s now)

Whatever....smoking makes it fun for spectators and makes for nice videos, I with you on this Stanbo. Nothing wrong with drifting correctly AND making some smoke

I guess some of you aren't understanding...

I DO NOT want this, this attracts TOO MUCH ATTENTION:

I would prefer this, it's less noticeable especially on streets:

Just in case I decide to have a little fun on a drive around town, I don't want crazy ass smoke attracting a lot of attention...especially some cops attention. If there was some tire squeal and a little bit of smoke that cleared up quickly it would be much less suspicious than a huge cloud of smoke lingering for 30 seconds or more.
