will anything other than oil starvation cause a turbo to seize up?

A buildup of solid chunks of oil that occur in the turbo when the engine is turned off while the turbo is still spinning fast (BB). Or if the oil in the system is heated higher than normal. It happens naturally too, just takes alot longer.

well the only way to see if it is there is to take apart the turbo. It is right behind the plate that is behind the turbine wheel. But turbos only come apart from the compressor side (they could come apart from the turbine side but are usually extremely rusted over).

If you decide to check this you might as well get it rebuilt or do it yourself.

What if your turbo isn't water cooled? (Mine is oil only) What oil is best? I've been toying with the idea of either Mobil 1 or Royal Purple... Anyone have any suggestions?

mobil 1, just remember to turbo time every day every where

Most reputable places will do that, HT, phase2, etc.

I dont see how turbo timers are really a big deal unless you have a ball bearing turbo. The point is to let the turbo spool down, but journal bearing turbos slow down pretty quickly to begin with.

Stock SR turbos are water and oil cooled...
There could have been a water blockage or something
A kinked oil or coolant line is usually the cause of these things

no blocked lines or kinked lines. but oh well, my guy replaced the turbo for me installed and running. my intercooler is on the way (ups).
