Ultimate Coilover Thread

I noticed that there isn't a dedicated, comprehensive coilover thread here.
So I'm going to start one for those of us/you who do not have coilovers yet and need some personal opinions/feedback or just want to share your likes/dislikes.

So, I need:
1) the brand & model coilover you run
2) the type of driving you do
3) your feelings/impressions about them
4) are you happy with their customer service?
5) where you got them
optional:
6) how much you paid
7) good or bad customer service (if bought from a retailer who is not the manufacturer)

I know there has been significant discussion of mr's, kts', tein etc., but this is more to give an easy, one-stop solution for people's coilover questions.

Also, suspension components all work together, so if you have other suspension goodies that you feel have greatly improved the handling of your car, let us know too.

Thanks!

I'd start, but I don't have any yet. :dancingwt

S14 Silk Road RM/A8 (8/7)

Daily driven, good amount of spirited driving.

They were stiff as hell when I first installed them (08/05). I felt EVERYTHING and was not too fun to drive on those rough roads.
After they got worn in, they got much softer. The springs did sag a good amount and the ride became a little bouncy. After putting it off for a while, i readjusted everything a couple of nights ago (11/05). Coilovers now live up to its name.

**edit**
hey unwed, how about an index on your first post? makes it easier for people to find what they're looking for.
in the order that they were posted:

Megan Racing - raen419
KTS - SimpleS14
K Sport - Projekt Sil80
K Sport - sleepyRPS13
Tein Basic - s15driftking
Tein HE - raen419
JIC FLT-A1 & Tanabe Sustec Pro Type-II - angelthepig
Tein Flex - sr240dett3
Silk Road RM/A8 - aijo_
KYB AGX/Eibach Sportlines - dru
JIC FLT-A1US - cervasa
Silk Road RM/A8 - KA240SX

how about dividing up S13 and S14 setups? just a thought.

KTS coilovers seem like a great deal bacause they can be rebuilt:dancingco but it seems that MR coilovers offer just about the same amount of options as the KTS's (except the MRs are only $850, which is a great price:gaylaugh teehee) so can anyone tell me if MRs can be rebuilt?:yummy

p.s. can anyone recommend an affortable online site to purchase tein products? (im also looking into them because of their reputation and customer service) if anyone of this sounds like crazy talk please point me in the right direction:rotflmao thanks guys!!

1) the brand & model coilover you run : Kei-Office TE (8/7)
2) the type of driving you do: drift, solo II, daily
3) your feelings/impressions about them : Im very happy with them, you know you can trust name brand stuff, no fear of defects/service.
Im a fan of full race cars (super stiff cars dont bother me, im young) so I'll say they do feel soft to me... but their quite confortable for daily driving, and they DO hold you to the road. the "Filet Minion" of entry coils
4) are you happy with their customer service? : yep, DF said they will take care of any service on Kei-Office coils as they are an official US distributer
5) where you got them : www.DriftFactory.com of CA
6) how much you paid: ...zero
7) good or bad customer service: Sponsorship contest last spring (thank you NICO! its were I found the application)
the've been great, Lori and everyone down in CA are great people... know how to handle a buisness and keep their customers close and happy.:thumbsup
(my Official review is on their website under sponsor)

old set: Buddy Club Coilovers- hated them, ride was like a skateboard-sold them to a friend that autoX's

running now: D2's-heard all kinds of really bad things bout them, cheap, poor quality, weak, etc- I like them, they ride nice, handle great, 36way adjustable, pillow top ball mounts, camber adjustment, no noise, the only bad thing about them is they are girl ass purple

in a box that I haven't used yet: Ksports-nice design, resembles the D2's in construction almost exactly. I'm taking it from previous post they are nice.

1) the brand & model coilover you run : HKS Hypermax II's (i believe 8/7)

2) the type of driving you do:daily spirited backroad driving, daily drifting, i just drive hard

3) your feelings/impressions about them : I love them. They are very very stiff and i dont have them up all the way. They are great for grip of drift. And they are purple and chrome :heyhey I have rode in 240's with Tein HE's, D2's, Tein Basics, and Silkroads. Those all felt nice but mine get much stiffer the only one of those i liked in compariaon to mine were the silkroads.

4) are you happy with their customer service? : hmmm bought them through a buddy in Tampa but he said that when he bought them the service was excellent lol

5) where you got them : Buddy in Tampa

6) how much you paid: 1100 shipped

7) good or bad customer service: Excellent

1) JIC FLT-A2 7/5
2) Drifting track/touge, grip touge, daily driving
3) Love them, 15 way adjustable I can notice the stiffness settings between 1 and 15 but not every single click. I run 15 in the front and 8 in the rear dampening and it suits me great. Some people would say the coilovers are too stiff but I love them. For daily driving it doesn't bother me. Body roll went away for the most part, I still need sway bars for it to fully go away. The coilovers are kind of squeaky but I got used to it and it doesn't bother me anymore. I also love how low you can lower your car with these, you can literally have your car on the ground with any of the JIC coilovers, its awsome since I love low cars. They are also strong, I slid into the curb sideways on the touge going around 50 and they held up just fine, actually all of the suspension pieces held up fine only the wheel bent.
4) Yes, I got them from my sponsers and when I had a question they called up JIC and they had the answer within mintues.
5) PRE

Other suspension peices I have:
Topspeed tension rods
Tops speed rear traction rod
JIC rera camber upper arm
Topspeed front ladder bar chassie
Topspeed rear lower arm bar
and I have strut bars

Topspeed is also made by JIC so I like them, my car is really riggidy after installing everything, other people that have driving it say its really twichy, stiff and is too much for them, but thats what a drift car is supposed to be like, I'm used to my car, I can drift it just fine. I love the way my car feels and I still don't have allignment from when I installed all my suspension parts, which was about 5 months ago give or take and the car drifts and drives just fine, can't wait to get alignment though so it can be properly dialed in. I also recomand getting a seat after you get coilovers, I know when I installed my suspension and I went to go grip I was sliding around everywhere in my seat from the g-forces, I have a JIC full bucket seat and I love it, its real comfortable and it holds you in place.

I'm looking for a coilover system with not more that a 500 lb/in spring rate front and rear. I'de like a streeatble ride. I had JIC's in my previous ride and the were about 700+ front/ 600+ rear lb/in spring rates and the ride was brutal.. It looks like Tien makes the softest set up.. Any other options?

HKS HIPERMAX II''s
retail:about $2,200-before shipping
paid:$1640 shipped
i had em on a pretty high setting at first, they were too stiff for me and not good for daily driving if ur roads are fuked up, a couple times i almost flew out of my chair. have since turned it to the softest setting, much more driveable, but still a good stiffness. i like the purple. i also have a JIC rear stb, 40mm. its a fatty. my car is lowered as far as possible. i think its pretty low and i occasionally scrape on high speedbumps now. i think im gonna rip my front lip off when i get it.

I think on the MR site it said something about the coilovers being able to be overhauled (rebuilt).

1.) Megan Racing Coilovers 8/6
2.) All kinds of driving
3.) I love them, cmon full coilovers for $850 shipped? Can't really top that. Only thing that bugs me is 32way damper adjust... way too many.
4.) UMsports has GREAT customer service. Highly reccomended, my coilovers got to my house in about 2 days.
5.) UMsports
6.) $850 shipped
7.) Same Q as #4?

#43 ·
1) Megan Racing Street Version (8/6)
2) Mostly daily with a little drifting
3) I've had them for about 3 months and after getting the settings the way I like it, I love them.
4) Haven't had to use MR's customer service yet.
5) Underground Motorsports Site.
optional:
6) $900 shipped (price has lowered $50 since)
7) UMsports, like the person before my post said, has awesome customer service.

I know these have been reviewed a few times already but I have been nothing but completely satisfied with these coilovers. The 32-way adjustability is a little much but not too much of a nuisence. These are on my DD so the streetability was an important factor when buying coilovers. The MRs are very streetable but can handle the abuse of the track as well. I did some research on these before I bought them and I couldnt find anybody that had anything bad to say about them. They are still relatively new so we'll see how they do after I've had them for a while. I would highly recommend.

I know the MR's are pretty good, but do you really thing they are better then the Tein Flex ?

I know the Tein Flex are soft. but how decent are they ?
They are 7/392 - 7/392

I ask cuz i have them now, but it will be just for street use
very mild Drift/Autox and maybe some gymkhana.

I plan on building a track car once the coupe is on the road.
this will have alot more suspention work done

#50 ·
megan racing is ok for the price they go for. if you are looking into the tein flex, there are better coilovers at that price range. yes we all want something that is stiff enough&good dampening for track use but just keep in mind your car is going to be daily driven, so having something softer isn't that big of a deal
