Well guys just wanted to keep you in the loop with some of my progress, my motor still isnt in yet but we're looking to do it this weekend. The motor I'm doing is a CA18DET running full standalone Megasquirt II V3.0 on a Ford EDIS-4 ignition. I've also worked on my dash to add a bunch of goodies.

Heres a pic of the CA.

The Crank pulley has a trigger wheel thats is a 36-1 teeth meaning it has 35 teeth. The trigger is our version of our CAS but less complicated and more reliable. It controlls my ignition. Their will be a sensor next to it.

Here is Megasquirt. The latest and most powerful version.

those 2 buttons control Megaview, its the display that is where the A/C control unit use to be. Megaview works together with Megasquirt allowing me to view parameters of whats going on with the engine and allow me to do some tuning on the fly, not as much tuning as with a laptop though. Its kind of like Power FC, SAFC, SDS but 20 times better.

The Gauges are All Autometers Z series.

From Center vent left to right
Boost/Vacuum, Exhaust Gas Tempature, Oil Pressure

Bottom is Oil and Water Temp.

and Megaview displays everything such as timing, O2, Air Temp, Coolant Temp, Motor Status, RPMs, and other goodies.

Also those 2 buttons are paired with another 2 that I havent installed yet.

Red is for Increase, Black is Decrease,

The other set of buttons will be Select and Stop.

my unit cost me $250 its $70 less if you get Megasquirt I, I have Megasquirt II. You have to build it yourself or pay $399 for prebuilt unit with 1 yr warranty. Megaview Cost me $110 also need to build it, the reason megaview cost me $110 was because of the screen I'm using is $70 makes it readable in any light. Parts and board cost $40.

You can get megasquirt from numerous places I got mine from www.diyautotune.com that guy does a awesome job everything comes prelabeled on where the parts go to the board in seperate bags.

Heres how much Megasquirt cost me.

Megasquirt II V3.0 - $250 shipped
Megasquirt Harness - $40 in materials (you build your harness)
Sensors - Free you use your stock sensors or usually $40 to use GM sensors.
Mega Stimulator - $35 Not required but lets you test MS and teaches you how to tune. Highly recommended.
Megaview - $110 Not required a cheap and effective way if you want to minimize gauges.
Ford Coil Pack - $20 junkyard
Ford Coil bracket $ 7 junkyard
Ford Wheel - $ 5 finger discount at junkyard
Ford Module - $ 5 finger discount at JY

Machine work to mount wheel and pulley $200 <--- optional lots of ways to mount the trigger, the way I choose required more work but guarenteed to work for 300,000 miles.

go to www.megasquirt.info and www.msefi.com for more info.

depends on how knowledgable you are with motors. This is my first time, but luckily I have a friend who is a mechanic for over 10 years, and is a certified EFI tuner. He really likes it and was surprised that he didnt know about MS. I would say the hardest part of Megasquirt is building it if you go the building route. Also probably the bad thing about megasquirt is the massive amount of information their is on it, that its overwhelming. They're is soooooo many options to choose from when deciding on ignition system such as GM HEI, FORD EDIS, MSD ignition etc etc.

Heres my suggestion get the RB started and know its working, then you can go about choosing MS. I have a CA and the CA shares a lot of characteristics of RB motors. For one CAS cant be used with MS, they just released a add on to use your Coil Packs, or you can integrate a Ford EDIS-6 ignition system and it would be exactly like mine.

It is fairly easy its just that massive amount of information is intimidating. But once you start reading over and over and over you start to make sense of it and realize how easy it really is. When I received megasquirt I didnt know how to solder, had a friend teach me and its ridiculously easy not to mention serves a good technique later down the road.

Would I recommend it to a first timer, sure the programs are easy to learn and use just keep reading the sites and forums. I did about 3 months of research, and 1 month of preping. Also megasquirt is about 12yrs old and the people who created are still in the forums and they help you out and pretty much if you have a problem they probably know 7 ways to fix it if its megasquirt related and mechanical.

Some of the advantages Megasquirt is that its a Full Standalone nothing like a piggy back, no plugging into stock ecu, etc etc. You get a lot of tuning features as you would from Haltech, Microtech, Hondata, Chrome, AEM EMS, but without the price tag. Megasquirt is open sourced and upgradable. Say for example MS didnt have boost control which by the way it does you just add a solenoid, and someone made a code to let you use boost control you can download it to MS and set it up and now you have boost control.

For your RB25 their is options, for example Ford EDIS-6 same as mine but the coil pack has 6 connections, nothing fancier.

MS has thousands of people who have successfully used MS and several people are in the 1000+ hp range using MS.

just go to www.megasquirt.info they have crash courses on everything even learning how to tune your car.
