Hi IM looking to get my first 240 IM looking to spend under 5K and drive it as I build it but all the carsthat IM finding all have welded diffs. Is it gonna tear tires and parts apart or would it be ok to daily drive

It's really not the best for daily. Your tires will wear slightly quicker. You'll also chirp going around corners. Driving in the rain sucks donkey balls. Other than that it works. I run welded on track and switch to open if I drive on the street.

I live in Vegas so it really doesn't rain that much but the first thing I was planning on changing was the wheels and tires and I don't wanna blow through tires like crazy. So no problems with breaking axels or wearing out the diff. PS thanks for the help

Running the same axles it came with in 91. Looking at getting a one piece driveshaft. But that's something different unrelated to the diff. I burn off tires to fast to really give you a good idea at life span. I really really haven't seen much wear or no unusual wear on ring or pinion gears.

Zigg- Prepare for trans noise. That 1pc will transfer the tiny bit of play the welded has between engagements. It's not bad, but def a "wtf is that noise" moment. Good solid metal clunk.

Also- I'm curious what tires you're running and at what alignment. I didn't really notice any extra wear the months I was DD'ing mine with a welded

OP- Run a tire meant for rain. I.E. not a bald-dead-dontbecheap tire and you'll be ok. Rain is a matter of throttle control. Chirping didn't happen too much on mine, but it's about tire size and compound to whether it chirps, squeeks, shifts, or clunks.

Liveable- yes. Ideal, no, but livable. Can always swap it out for a standard pumpkin should you hate it.

Yeah I was kinda thinking and half expecting I'll get some engagement clunk. No big deal. As for tire I've ran kummo ecstas and potenza G009. The potenzas are the best I've had so far. But they are discontinued now. Got a great deal on them. It was more so of a chop wear to them. But at the time I had really bad blown out suspension. That I think caused more than the diff. I'll know more once I get the car back up and running again.

My kumho ecsta ast's seem to be good tires, but they are pretty sticky even for 205's and when I do roast them they just fall apart. I would not recommend them for anyone that likes to slide at all... But I think they would be great for grip/DD if (like I said) you don't like to get loose.

This was a good post, if you don't mind a little tire ware but more fun go for the welded diff, ok.

Do your research on the various R200 and R200V differentials. In the early/mid 90's most rear wheel sports cars Nissan made have the same differential with various output shaft spline counts so it really isn't difficult swapping out your differential on the car (and for some VLSD models, using different CV axles) once you buy it to an OEM VLSD for hopefully less cost than it'd be to put a few decent sets of tires on to get used to the welded. Just more food for thought, and more options if you find you don't like the welded differential once you get onto it a few times.

Edit: didn't check the post date beyond the most recent one. Thanks for the revival of a month old thread.
