:12dunno Hi folks - I am brand new to this car, just got it on the road this week. 90SE fastback, bone stock KA24E with 121k on the clock...

starts up fine and smooth, but idling can be a bit "lumpy" i guess... smooth for a while, then almost a "hiccup" or burble that you can really feel more than hear. feels like a fat guy farting on the car, like a little "whump" feel.

I don't know if this is related to my other "problem" where the engine seems to surge a bit when cold... it's embarassing cuz it makes me look like i dont know how to drive stick! its that sort of back and forth lurching, but with the throttle steady. it does it to me in 1st and 2nd gear but only when cold... it settles down after a couple of miles. it mainly does it at low rpm; between 2k and 3k. and like I said, it settles down after a few miles.

any ideas?? I have not had a chance for any real diagnostics such as compression tests or any sort of electrical testing of injectors or TPS or whatever. hell I dunno if this engine even HAS a TPS lol.

thanks for any info guys.

i would try a new fuel filter, i had a similar prob with my 97 turbo and spent a good chunk of coin to replace parts i thought were the culprit but it turned out to be a clogged furl filter i replaced it for 11.00 and the car runs perfect.

Try the filter and if it does that again, put some fuel system cleaner in your tank at the next fill-up. If it still pursists, clean the MAFS.

give it a tune up, if you are new to the car, you should give it a thourough once over. new fuel/air/oil filters, oil, plugs, run some cleaner in the gas tank... just want to make sure that its not something easy before you tear into it!

Good point about the basics. I have already done the basic tuneup with the exception of fuel system cleaner and fuel filter, as I wanted to finish out this tank of Sta-Bil treated gas that sat in there over the winter. I did oil change and filter, K&N panel filter, new plugs (plug wires and distributor cap look like they were replaced just before I bought the car), PCV valve, and O2 sensor... I'll probably do the fuel filter this weekend.

go get some bg 44k fuel system cleaner, or stp fuel inj cleaner and 87 octane fuel. if that doesent fix it, see if you are getting spark to all cylndrs. you can do that by holding the plug wire really close to the plug, and you will see arking. if all are ok then try to see which cyl is missing. you can do that while pulling the plug wires off one at a time and which ever plug wire does not effect how the car is running is the dead cyl. all you need to run is air spark and fuel, so it should be easy to narrow down.
