I have my SR on the way and just wanting to know what kind of oil you SR guys are using? I was thinking of Mobil 1 synthetic, but figured I'd get your opinoins. I tried searching but I didn't have the patience to look through all the pages. Also, do any of you use any additive (ex. Lucas oil stabilizer)? Let me know guys

i use mobil synthetic 10-30w. feels great. you should flush the system after you break it in. (ie, add one bottle of ATF, and the rest normal engine oil. run for 15 minutes, then drain it all out). my buddy recently reccomended me to flush the system. the thing felt like a brand new car. =)

I run mobil 1 all the time. 20w50 in the summers, and 10w30 the rest of the year.

For filters I buy whatever non-fram filters wal-mart happens to have at the same time I buy oil.

I did try searching...didn't know exactly what to search for...I tried 3 or 4 times and never came up w/ anything. sorry. I was thinking either a K&N oil filter or OEM. Anyone know where you can get OEM filters from? I know I've seen them around, just can't think of where. How about any additives guys? Gunk motor flush? marvel mystery oil? lucas oil sabilizer? Any of that stuff? Thanks for the replies so far. If anyone can find that thread for me, let me know

You can get OE filters from a nissan dealership...get the filters from a Sentra SE-R with the SR20DE (non-turbo) motor...same difference.

Also, the SR20DET takes:
3.5 quarts of oil without changing the filter
3.75quarts of oil with changing the filter
4 quarts of oil to fill a dry engine (meaning you just had a rebuild and the motor is empty)

some of you guys are really jumping around on this oil weight dill.. 20w-50, 15w-50?? Cars come with a manual for a reason. They tell you vital information about operating the vehical properly so your car lasts long, such the type of oil you should use. Without a doubt use sythetic or some type of synthetic blend whenver you can but people should take the weight of the oil more seriously. If i remember correctly, Nissan says 5w-30 for SR20DETs? or was it 10w30? multigrade oil is a wonderful thing but you have to learn how to use it properly.

10w-30, this meens 10 winter 30. The number represetns how thick the oil is. 10winter meens its 10 when the engine is cold, and 30 is when its at normal op temp. The reason why you use motor oil is to prevent metal to metal contact. Start up is what really kills you because you dont have oil flowing through your whole system. That is why you want a small number so the oil flows fast to the cams, and valves and all to coat it. If your using 20winter 50, that oil isn't as viscous as it was ment to be thus over long term, your cams and valve will wear out quicker via startup. 50 weight is kinda thick for normal use anways. Theres no harm tho. It keeps the metal nice and protected but being thicker, your lsowing your motor down. I'm not saying your gonna loose noticable HP and rev slower, but its just something to think about.

Silverbullet, You must understand that the Manual states those type of oil for "Normal Operations"
The reason why I use 15w-50 on my SR20DET is because I use my car for drifting and drag racing. While pushing my car hard, my motor would be using this oil at a good tempature. If I was using 5w-30, my motor would be cooking this oil. I hope I don't need to make a chart for you to understand how motor oil works.
Why do you think they make different type of oil, spark plugs, oil filters, etc. for??
I use step 7 cold plugs (good for under 350whp) for my motor, because I'm pushing 12-14psi.

LOL, the W doesn't mean Winter; it means Weight.

In a nutshell: use the right oil for your hp rating.

C'mon people... this is not fukin rocket science.

first # is what the viscosity is at cold start
second # is what the viscosity is at normal operating temperature

I use OEM oil filters since they are dirt cheap at $5.28 each and i order 6 at a time. I change my oil every 3,000 kilomoters (1,864.11 miles) and currently i have conventional 10w40 in it which i change every 500 miles since its free and bulk at my shop.

I USUALLY USE Quaker State synthetic 10w30 or Castrol SYntec 10w40 since the FSM RECOMMENDS THAT VISCOSITY FOR MY CLIMATE. Never have i cooked it or burned it.

Now that i saw 5w40 synthetic castrol today, i may start using that. But You must also understand that the further apart those two numbers are, the more prone the oil is to breakdown since it needs to "stretch" between a great viscosity difference. Little things you learn when readings and listening.
