HICAS is exactly that, all wheel steering. IF your car has it you will have a light near your rear wiper blade switch that has a little light that says HICAS. Also on the side of the car in front of the rear wheel well on the black trim it will say SUPER HICAS.

hey dude, where in ON r u from man?
oh and yea, super hicas is all wheel steering... im surprised that u havent heard or seen one with it because like 70% of all the cars that were sold in canada were in fact hicas, i know mine is ;)

in my opinion it has its pros and cons... it certainly isnt for the person who wants to drift and its very expensive to fix if it breaks. also, the power steering lines that run to the rear of the car have a tendency to rot-through since theyre held in place with brackets with foam insulation (water gets trapped and u know what happens). pros are that you get really sharp steering... the harder you push into a corner the more the car carves into it... it can catch you off guard if your not used to it since it oversteers and makes you feel like youve broken loose the rear end but everythings fine.

either way, you gotta try it for yourself

no, Super HICAS and HICAS are not the same thing. Super HICAS is a more advanced system, as HICAS is older (first appearing in 1985). its just common for people to refer to Super HICAS as just plain HICAS, although they are technically not the same thing.

Super HICAS (maybe HICAS?) also affects the camber of the rear tires, or so ive heard. It has small hydrolics and actuators to adjust it for more grip, which is why you DONT want it, if the car has ABS, check for Super HICAS

the car i just bought has HICAS, i've been hanging around the nissan dealer trying to find someone who has half a brain to see if they can help me create an on/off switch for it; sort of a grip/drift switch (yeah right :D never drifted in my life) no luck just yet.

i havent seen any small hydrolics or actuators to adjust anything; just 2 lines and a steering rack behind the diff.

It says in the manual that if the 'system' detects a fault; all rear wheel steering will stop and the system will act as a normal car; I just want to find a way to trigger a fault in the system at will; reverse the light with some creative wiring; so that when it's lit hicas is on and off it's not. So far i'm not gettng far i dont have a FSM yet and the chiltons i have is shit, complete shit; looked at the hayns and it wasnt much better. What i really need is someone who knows more about it then i could get from a book to just point me in the right direction, but dealing with the nitwits at some of these dealers just leaves me depressed.

I'll probably end up geting a hicas cancel bar. but now my car is 50+ pounds heaver; plus it would be fun to use at the grip track I want to go to.

My next project is disabling ABS, i dont like the feel of it.

Yeah I have heard about being a maintenance headache. I was looking at buying a car that had Super HICAS, but I'd kinda rather not have it. I use the excuse that "I'd like to try drifting one day," but I'm not so sure I'll ever get around to it!

For the on/off switch, now this is just my idea, try putting a electronic switch to stop the flow of fluid from going to the back tires like a gate to stop flow when you flick a switch... just an idea..

for the switch i've decided to try this:
I'm fairly sure when your going really slow HICAS doesnt do anything; well I went into the Nissan Dealer around here and was able to find someone who even knew what it was and got him to print me some wiring diagrams.
There is a speed sensor that is wired into the HICAS computer; i'm just going to read it going like 4 mph then wire up something to trick it to thinking i'm going 4 mph at a flick of a switch.

I've been really thinking about this, i'm not gods gift to drifting or anything but I do want to try new things (away from people ofcourse) now i'm worried that the steering pin control arms in the rear cant take the abuse of being sidways for very long.

Anyone care to explain how a HICAS cancal bar works?

I'm not to sure on how the bar works but i would just think it locks the wheels in place where the hicas used to be and makes the wheels at a fixed position instead of movable with 4 wheel steering. but i am not to sure

I think that's a correct assumption. At least that's the way I understood the bar.

Anyone ever taken the system out completely? If so, I'd be interested to know what parts were used, and possibly how much weight was saved.

I figured the bar would lock the rear wheels up, from the pic above it looks like you would have to remove the rear steering pin to install the bar. I belive it was stated somewhere that hicas adds 20 kg (44 lb) to the car, not that much but still extra weight.

Looking at diagrams I belive it wouldnt be to hard to get a wrecked 240 and take the whole rear suspension and put it on a HICAS car; the whole rear end is a subframe; much like the front of most FF cars (I know, I did my own transmission work on my Saturn).

Replacing the rear subframe(if thats the real term) was my orignal plan but the wrecked car i went to look at was in such shitty shape i could let myself buy it; the front drivers side strut tower broke because it hit a huge pothole, the rest of the car looked like it had been flooded or something. Nothing on the inside or the non wrecked outside was worth anything. Even the engine was crap, 210k on the clock....so the search continues.
