What is this? Why does it make my car run badly?

OK, im sure it has been adressed but i cant find it. what is this in the picture. I am thinking it is some sort of intake sensor or something......it is on an 89, and it is right on the block to the left of the 4 plugs that run the fuel injectors (i think that is what they do :) ) KA24e

anyway, when i bought the car, i notced that this plug was out. so, being the ultimate mechanic i am, i decided to plug it back in. well, as soon as i did, my idle dropped and the car was running a bit weird. So, i decided to take it for a drive. for some reason the car would bog at low RPMs and hesitate when i let out the clutch. I unplugged the plug, and the car ran fine. what is this?

thanks

nope, no check engine lights. Only the brake light and my seatbelt ligth flashes (drivers side doesnt work). My friend said it might be the MAF, but i wanted a second opinion. but yea, i dont know why it would run good unplugged either. go figure.

weird. than why would that make my car run funny? a temperature sensor doesnt seem like it messes with the car? just a sensor. what could i do to fix this?

anyone else have this problem?

When you're coolant temperature sensor is bad, it makes the engine run very rich. Mine was running so rich it would be hard to idle, until we replaced the ECTS...immediately after it idled.

most of the eccs operations have the coolant temperature sensor as a variable for many of its operations. get that connected and im sure it'll fix a lot of problems

you should really get a factory service manual asap!

bought an electronic coolant temperature sensor tonight. gonna slap it on tomorrow. i wont really be able to see if it worked because i cant drive my car. hooray for burning my clutch up :)

Bad coolant sensor made my SR run like BOO BOO and sound like a WRX... Not kosher. So yeah, they will make your car run bad.

well, what do you know, it worked. it was a bitch pulling that sensor out tho. my 19mm socket wasnt deep enough, and my wrench was too big to use (fuel injector rail was in the way)

so i had to use a crescent wrench, and then turn it with another wrench. so i used 2 tools at the same time to get the damn thing out. but, it worked, and now my car runs ALOT better. too bad i cant test drive it because i blew my clutch, haha.

wish i woulda taken pictures.
