im 15 looking for a first car my budget is 1k - 3.5k, ive narrowed down my choices down to a nissan 240sx hatchback or a 1990-96 nissan 300zx 2+2, both haft to be a manual. i live in michigan.

which do u think is the better option in terms of reliability / performance / handling / cost?

i would use the car for dd but also NASA hpde and id modify the handling / performance / sound / looks / stiffen up chassis over time as i get more experienced also which has more aftermarket support?

i personally really want a 300zx becuase of the looks and it sounds like a v8
what would you go with?

It probably wont even matter. Your 15 years old. Not saying you will (and hopefully you won't) but inexperience drivers behind the wheel of almost any car = broken/totaled.
Do you have any driving experience at all? <- Serious question, no sarcasm.

i plan on doing rally-cross and maybe American iron racing after i get a competition license or performance touring or super touring or super unlimited and since SCCA recognizes NASA memberships probably SCCA club racing and rally-cross

and driving experience yes i have a permit and drive all the time and have no problems also i come from a family where everyone is excellent drivers especially me
but i do not have anyone racing experience on go karts because of never having the money to get into it but if i did i would've

i think both of your choices are too much car for a beginner(especially the Z) why dont you get a reliable DD and save some money and get some experience behind the wheel before you hop in a sports car, trust me you got plenty of time in your life for a sports car theres no need to have one for your first car.

and on top of that your insurance would be ridicules. Even if you get a regular car its still going to be high

just my $0.02

I agree, but given the choices listed, the 240 would be a much better idea. Z's are not that cheap, insurance is high because its a "sports car", and upgrades are very expensive. A set of cams will set you back almost $700.

you joined a 240 forum and your asking people what they prefer between the 300zx and a 240sx, what answer do you think you going to get?

ahah get the prelude i dogged in my stock 240.. ricer wing and all.. those 300zx are way to heavy for anything (hating), so like the 99.9% of us in here go with a 240.. i got one as my first car after having like 3 years of driving experience and its a ton of fun (generic). bring this same thread to hondalife.com (i hope that aint a real website)

:iagree:Definately gona have to agree with everyone on here who recomended the 240,lighter,easier to work on,cheaper to get parts for ,and would not recomend a 300z for rallycross haha im sure everyone on here knows what im talking about.

but if you want a 240 or whatever for your first car go for it. I know to many people that wish they would of got what they really wanted

Both are great cars for what they were built for, the 240sx is going to be your best bet to be honest, however, I would get lots and lots of time in doing auto X events in your area that just require a helmet before stepping into the time attack stuff.

Ive been driving and racing for 14 years, everywhere from drag to drift to nonsense street stuff back in my dumb n young days, owned a shop for several years and could do my own labor. Most 15yr olds dont have the kind of money it takes to actually do very much worthwhile stuff for very long, which i see may happen to you.

(you're talking about budget friendly cars here, if you mentioned like a Time trial built EVO then we'd be able to tell that perhaps you had some money sitting around in the parents bank account or whatever)

stick with the 240, learn to drive it do autoX and after a year if you still enjoy it, buy another 240sx and have that for your track/whatever car that way when you break it, you won't be on foot.

One of the best mods you can buy is a reliable daily driver vehicle :) (which usually is some sort of beat up pick up truck)
