Just got this thing insured and taged so I could put some miles on it and I have a strong gas oder while driving with a window open. No other time I can smell it except when going down the road. Doesn't matter which window or how far it is rolled down, the further I go the stronger it gets. Roll the window up and the smell goes away. Any ideas on what is causeing this?

no idea haha sorry that was pointless but all my 240s smelled i dunno why

my current 240 is missing a gasket between the cat and my 3"piping so that might be part of the reason my car smells now, check for exhaust leaks, check your fuel lines, check your gas tank see if its leaking or something

I had this problem on 2 of the 3 240's I own. Check the common places, injector areas for leaks as it could be an o-ring, also check around the fuel filter as a line could be leaking. If no problems there I found my '91 had a worn out fuel line in the back of the car by the tank and it also leaked to the ground so I replaced both hoses in rear.

here's a easy way to find out the worst . . . drive ur car around on a 1/4 tank for a little while in hot weather. Then pull over and open the gas cap. If you hear the PSHHHHHH sound of gases entering or escaping, then you probably have something wrong up front. But if no sound is made, then chances are you have a leak in the gas tank(which is a bitch to replace i might add . .) or in one of the lines that presurizes that gas.
My 91 240 had this problem. Whenever making a left turn, i would get this wiff of gas for about 30 secs. If i rolled my window up, i got nothing. Hope this helps.

only if you smell something should you performe the test to see if its up front or in back. If you don't smell anything and you get the pshhh, then you are perfvectly fine. Means everything is pressurized. But if you were to smell somegthing while still getting the pshh, it would probably be a problem up front.

Well guy's I've checked the car out from the tank all the way to the motor(with it up on jackstands) and can't find a leak anywhere. What is that thing above the rearend that has lines running to it from the tank? Could this be the problem? Also, what kind of mpg should I be getting? I am completly stock running an auto trans and burning 87 octane.

My car has this as well. Also when the tank is full of gas I get a pretty constant drop under the gas tank (passenger side).

Well after looking at the service manual I attempted to drop the fuel tank to see if there was a crack near the top.

I utterly failed, undid both straps and fuel pump trap door but the tank will only drop about 2 inches so there must be something else holding.

On the bright side, I was able to partially remove the tank protector and when I pulled it back I was able to trace back the trail of stained gas to the gasket where the filler pipe mates to the tank...I tightened all the bolts I could reach a good 1/2 turn and put everything back so we'll see if they were just loose causing gas to leak.

This is a 1992 fastback BTW. Does anyone know for sure how to drop the tank incase I have to do it again?? The service manual is crap.
