for as long as ive owned 240SXs, ive never had A/C. i always saw it as too big of a hassle to convert to R13a, and get it recharged. well finally i got tired of it and bought this conversion kit thing from the NEX to convert R12 to R13a and recharge it, all for like $25.

IT WAS SOO EASY! all i had to do was vent what little R12 was left in my system, screw on two fittings, put a cap on one, hook up the can and charge it! took less than 2 cans to fill up (comes with 3 cans). i capped it off, and VIOLA! cold A/C! the A/C light even turned on!

so bottom line is, dont waste money bringing your car to a shop to fix. just do it yourself and save money AND time. $25 was well worth it for cold A/C. i highly recomend it.

(in case you cant tell, im pretty stoked to finally have A/C)

What happened to all the R12? If it was all gone, then you have a leak. And guess what will happen to that R134a.........Also, when converting from 12 to 134a, you really should change the oil as well.....

Not that I want to rain on your parade or anything; I just got my a/c working as well. But dont be surprised if it stops blowing cold sooner rather than later.

its also illegal to swap in a sr20.

my point is... who cares about the law.

That was a really dumb statement.
Check this out if you dont care about the law. Next time you do( if you ever have) release freon into the air. Video tape it & post it if you dont care that much.

BTW this is older also. The laws in certain areas are MUCH more strict now. Including up to 10 years jail time & fines of $5000.

No need for a write up, many autoparts stores sell the kits and the directions are included.

Its best to have your system vacuumed to both remove the old coolant legaly and to remove any moisture from the system. I just did mine a few weeks ago and this was the first time I vaccumed down the system. I have to say, it seems to cool better with vaccuming down the system first than just equalizing/releasing the old pressure.

Plus with vaccuming it down I was able to track any leaks (I had 1 bad O-ring).

But yes, its not hard to do, and most service stations can vaccum it down cheaply and sometimes they don't charge you for removing the old R12 since they're gonna re-use it on someone else anyway.

By the way I've got A/C with my SR :)

its called having a 13-14 year old car, and living in hawaii. all the R12 was gone. i dont expect it to last a long long time. when it does run out, i still have a can and a half to fill it again. and when that runs out, its very cheap to get more.

yes it is. my R12 was already just about gone though, it was just a second or two of preasure left over in the system. i wasnt about to go to a shop to have them remove a tiny bit of R12.

The funny thing is R134A is less efficient and even more toxic than R12 but it doesn't hurt the ozone, so it's the required coolant now.
its actually non toxic and non flammable, but it doesnt contain cloroflourocarbons (CFC), which R12 does. which is why R134a doesnt kill the ozone layer.

hey man, im getting my info just like u, off other websites..
I don't get my stuff of the internet, I have known this since the early 90s. My dad was an HVAC tech for a school district and I ocassionally assisted during the summers. Most do not believe talk, so i just provided substance for substantiating my claims. So, no, you do nothing like me or you would have stopped yourself from saying that in the first place about the refrigerant...

Cool (no pun intended). I am just an asshole and going off as usual. Sorry...:(
lol.. kool

anyways.

after reading some of that yellow page (one of the links u provided) i read that some dude went into to cardiac arrest after inhaling r134a for 5 minutes in a 30 minute test, and that a leaky system can put enough r134a in a car cabin and can cause us to "die" aswell.. so why is it that they put it in newer cars? are companys so sure that their systems will never malfunction?

this whole retrofitting thing scares me now.
