I'm sure this has covered numerous times, but I see that alot of people opinions are sort of biased toward their limited knowledge of the subject. I want to know what the best differential commonly availible for s13's in terms of perfomance and reliability in regards to high level motorsport. Drifting, Drag, autocross, road racing, time attack, street racing, maybe even some off road stuff. I want something that with regular maintenance, will work well in all of those applications for a long time. I don't care if it's not safe for amateur drivers on the street or makes loud noises in parking lots, I just want the offering with best combination of performance and reliability.

Here is what I don't want to hear about.
Welded stick diff
stock r200
j30
anything stock/viscous

Here is what I'm interested in.
KAAZ
Nismo
Cusco
Tomei
Os Gieken
ATS
Carbonectic
Eaton

Please don't just list your favorite brand, be specific (i.e KAAZ basic 2 way, Cusco MZ 1.5, Nismo GT PRO)
I like the feel of 2 way but aren't against 1.5, please explain what you like about them specifically.I'm reading alot of particular characteristics regarding certain Diff's - i.e KAAZ require rebuilds sooner/Nismo doesn't have a strong initial lock but last longer, Cusco's last and lock hard ect ect. I would like some confirmation there. And again, like I stated for the reason of this post, if you are at a beginner level, use stock type diff's and either by limitations of your car or skill, aren't really at a level to give advice in the matter, please refrain from doing just that.

Thanks in advance.

Thank you for you effort Ziggy, but alas, the only thing in that thread about an aftermarket lsd is something someone heard about the reliability of some brands (and that info was false). I am probably in the top 1 percentile of using the search button and rarely have to actually make a post asking questions. When It comes to this subject it seems the ratio of people that actually own quality aftermarket lsd's discussing their attributes to people with lincoln lockers/stock from another vehicle differentials talking about the attributes of what they use or what they heard about aftermarket lsd's is roughly 1:1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

It is apparent that simply asking isn't going to work.I guess I will just have to spend untold hours compiling the information myself and make a thread so that future generations won't have to swim through the b.s to get some answers.

Also thought you should know I have been admiring those ITB's since you did that write up and can't stop thinking about them in a KA-T application.

If you look through the drifting section, there has already been quite a bit of discussion about LSDs. Many people will talk about stock based LSDs because they are cheaper. Most 240 owners aren't the richest people in the world, so they have the "run whatcha brung" attitude. I was prepared to talk about my experiences with the Nismo 1.5 way in my old S14, but after a post like that ^^^, i think I'll forgot about it.

See what I mean?

Even when I'm in direct contact with someone who has had experience with an aftermarket l.s.d, on my thread about how hard it is to find user derived information about them no less, they don't wan't to share their opinion with me.....

Well at least he proved my point better than I ever could.

Eaton makes a diff for the R200?

Also every single brand list will do anything you ask it too.
Only difference is availability or rebuild parts and how aggressive or smooth they are.
I know of lots of Kaaz, Nismo and Tomei diffs that are well over 5yrs old still going strong, still locks doesn't make much noise ,etc.
Most of those only seeing drifting though.

So no matter what diff you buy ones not gonna break before the other.
Maintain it and it should last you a long time.
Might as well just get a Kaaz since it's state side, lots of used ones for sale and you can get rebuild kits no problem.

^^Dude, you need to lighten up. It's not a matter of internet urination contests- It's all about getting what you give... and all in good fun- Relax ;) This is the most 'tame' 240 forum on the net~

First- figure out whether an open, viscous, 1-way, 1.5-way or full-on 2-way will suit your kind of driving. You mentioned several types of driving that demand different types of diffs to really be cometitive.

Drift & drag- definitely a 2-way

Daily, drift & drag- a good, tight VLSD or 1.5-way may give a better balance; but a lot of guys still run 2-ways. Be advised, 2-way = nightmare if you ever have to drive on icy surfaces.

Daily, Drift, Drag, Time attack, Circuit, Gymkhana & Auto-X- I personally would recommend a VLSD & a set of highly adjustable coilovers... Only because of the fact that you don't want both rear wheels turning at full speed in high-speed, tight turns (unless purposely wanting to drift the corner)- It becomes unsafe and will hurt your overall lap times. Open diffs are actually really good on the street/circuit as well; but suck for drift & drag.

Bottom line: take notes of the different options' pros and cons... You have a great brand list- just figure out what you think would be the best balance.

Even though you specifically mentioned that you don't want stock- I run a stock 180SX/R32 VLSD. It's great for backroads, street, road trips, circuit etc and also does pretty well for drag... I don't drift only because of the amount of money I have into it... but the point is that it's a great balance for many types of spirited driving.

Chill uot, go forth and conquer, Grasshopper.

What you're doing with it and your driving style will affect what version you get. Brand? Pick one on sale. They all work the same, and you're not at a level where you'll be able to tell any difference. Price is your biggest difference. Style? Look what works on what you do with it. Rapper runs a 1.5, others run 2.0. Some still are on weldeds and owning it.

We don't need a thread just on aftermarkets....pick one you're interested in, and google about it. Stop googling for aftermarket and search a specific brand.

I guess now I should mention one of my businesses is importing parts for locals. I can choose from just about every center out there. While used ones are often similar in price, they are still a big investment compared to the parts I'm used to dealing with, so it's important I get it right the first time.

One thing I have noticed over the years, especially with our cars, is that it's hard for people to pick a direction and stick with it. The other and more likely scenario is that they want to go in all directions with their build, and that's where having the initial question of the best all around L.S.D becomes so Important, since that will be what I stock first. It would also be nice to have the same "go to" L.S.D when I order, on the off chance they suffer failure in the first week since that gives me enough to exchange the customers LSD with the same one and get it reported in time for warranty coverage.

After factoring in the above statement, doing alot of research and considering a cost that will easily sell, I am going to order an ATS metal and a KAAZ solid for my initial on hand stock to get a feel for both, unless someone can give me a good reason not to.

As far as what I will recommend for special orders, I'm going to take Boostin's advice about using what has reputable stateside service, which really makes sense, and go with KAAZ, ATS and NISMO. They all have stateside service* and are very specific about the applications of their products lines, taking out the guesswork on my end.

**ATS now has a USA division instead of re branding through Carbonetic. Only time will tell as to the quality of their U.S service, however research has lead me to find their service in Japan exemplary and I have no reason to expect their stateside division to be any different.

*Nismo is on the list out of assumption that at least one stealership reputably services them, but I would like some confirmation on that, and if they charge about the same .

If there are other brands known to have good stateside differential service, at service prices comparable to the brands mentioned above, then I would like testimony to that as well. Since most of the diff's I deal in will be used, this sort of thing becomes very important. As of now, I can't find where Cusco USA specifically states they service their diff's stateside and I can't even confirm Tomei, or O.S Geiken servicing anything of theirs stateside.

Okay, that's it for now. Thanks for all the advice and sorry if I was a bit crass to anyone/everyone. I've always been alot to put up with, but most who do put up with me, find it worthwhile. Not leaving it a that, I'm going to make an effort to tone it down some. And that's not so people will be more likely to give me their advice/opinion, even though I do value it greatly, It just comes down to the fact when I look back on some the things I've posted, I just wonder how I'm pushing 30 and in some ways, haven't really grown up yet.
