Junk Delete

This is a mod I'm quite proud of. I took several days and tore down the intake in order to surgically remove, re-route and redo everything the way I wanted it. I knew this was preparation for turboing at some later point in time.

EGR junk gone, block off plate made
carbon canister gone
emissions junk from rear gas tank area gone
unecessary vacuum hoses, hard lines, etc gone

What also aided in this procedure was the adoption of a 95 ECU. The 95 ECU doesn't look for most of the added emissions stuff that was added to 96-98 model years. I did have to fab up a circuit to keep the EGR gas temp sensor happy. I used two resistors and a relay to do this. This also required some re-pinning at the ECU harness connector.

Off of this octopus, I snipped out a few lines I needed to retain and alleviated myself of the rest

ECU Repin per JWT's instructions. JWT did miss one pin. On the 97/98 MYs there is a fuel temp signal that mates up with the intake air temp sense line. You have to pull the fuel temp pin out, find your AIT line somewhere else in the connector and swap it in.

Used ACT clutch

Not sure why I didn't just buy a new one, but for some reason I picked up someone else's ACT clutch. I can't even remember what "Stage" it was, but it was decent. It felt good, had good clamping force, but was a bit too grabby for me I felt. Later, I ended up replacing this with a JWT and many more to follow.

Test Fitting Altima rims

I think by now in my chronology, I've missed this part. I probably did this back somewhere around the time of my sway bar install. But oh well.

The parents have an 02 Altima, V6 of course, and I've always been fond of the rims. 17" seemed ideal. I knew the offset would be a problem, so I jacked up dad's car and did a test fit. It took these 3/8" spacers to make it work. Later on I would get exact fit 5mm spacers.

A word of caution any spacers at all will induce a shimmy in the wheel almost with certainty. Mine wasn't too bad, it would come and go. It seemed to do it more when cold. I dealt with it. Later on, I would get G35 coupe rims and not need the spacers anymore.

Next Up: J30 Diff, One Piece Driveshaft, Spec Clutch

While the JWT clutch is somewhat worthy, it still was not providing the snap-clamp feeling I was looking for like its counterpart does for the FWD SR20. So, I decided to go with a Spec Stage 3+ clutch that the guy from HeavyThrottle talked me into. At the same time I bought a one piece driveshaft because I wanted to get rid of the two piece with the carrier bearing. I have no justification for this other than I thought simplicity = good. At the same time I was installing the J30 Diff with LSD. I was actually wanting the slightly taller final drive. I felt the final gear ratio of the stock unit was a tad to short. I was running out of first gear too quick.

This first Spec clutch was actually manufactured incorrect and didn't fit the flywheel. I had to send it back to Spec and HeavyThrottle sent me a new one. This sucked.

The end result was satisfactory, however I became hateful of this clutch as it chatter heavily and required to either drive like a grandma off the line or drag launch from every start. The torque holding capability was good, it just wasn't a good daily clutch in my opinion. I would eventually swap this clutch out for a custom built clutch from SouthBend Clutch. SBClutch is Awesome by the way. I would recommend clutches from them over just about anybody else.

G35 Rims

I spent a lot of time researching Nissan/Infiniti wheels because I have this intense desire to keep a stock look. I wanted to find a wheel that would suit my needs to clear the Z32 brakes without using spacers and fill the wheel wells nicely. Finally I found that G35 coupe rims would fit this criteria.

Turbo Buildup

And now the turbo buildup. I spent almost three years building up these parts. It took a lot of research and procrastinated decision making that was exacerbated by financial contraints.

Notice the dent I had to pound into the divorced section of the wastegate return tube in order to clear the steering column.

Thanks for looking.

Up next will be a rebuild and powdercoat of my brakes and a 3000GT VR4 rotor and caliper relocation install.

Specs on kit are as follows:

GT2871 .64 A/R exhaust housing, 6-7psi wastegate
Supposed prototype Megan Racing exhaust manifold acquired from Jeff @ Heavy Throttle
Ebay Jpipe
Ebay Universal front mount kit (really glad I went this route)
ATP Turbo banjo fittings for coolant supply/return and oil fittings and restrictor
- Coolant supply from block drain plug, returned to heater return line on other side of engine
- Oil supply from filter sandwich plate, returned to fitting in oil pan
Courtesy downpipe (that ALMOST fit bolt on style) had to have the neck extended by about 2 inches.
Coutesy cat delete pipe
Nismo Adjustable FPR, set at 4 bar
S15 480cc@3bar (which are really more like 440cc@3bar) at least from what I saw while tuning
Z32 turbo output
S14 turbo inlet tube with PCV fitting
Earl's #6 AN oil return fitting fit to oil pan
RB25 recirc valve with accompanying RB pipe section, cut to fit
One custom welded aluminum pipe section to Ebay IC pipe for recirc return
Section of super duty heavy ass, farm grade 1" tubing for recirc (what goes across the front of the radiator)
E60 MAF
Calumsult RT Tuning solution (God I love this thing) using Logworks, Calumsult, Nissan DataScan
LC-1 Wideband
E85
Nismo radiator cap
90's Altima fans
SR20 lower radiator hose cut to fit the upper on the KA. Fit's nicely.
Z32 fuel filter
misc bolts and studs I had to buy...
I've exhausted my memory

I think E60 is the same or nearly the same as an N60 (Maxima, I30, RB?) MAF. Perhaps just an updated version for the late 90's and into the 2000's MY's. I scoured the SR20 forum for the VQ table and found one in someone else's tune post. I copied and pasted just the VQ table out of their tune. Evidently it works great. :)

Since my turbo came with OEM style housings (compressor and exhuast sides), the Z32 compressor outlets work/fit, as would any SR20DET turbo outlet I believe. The inlet is the standard two bolt size that the S14 inlet tube seems to be made for.

Hey bmoses I was wondering if you could get a shot of the Hot-Pipe like this cause I need to know if I need to use an S14 or S14 Hot-Pipe and kinda hard to judge from your pic. thanks :)

I'll see if I can dig something up. But it's not an off-the-shelf hot pipe if that's what you are thinking. It's really something cobbled together to make work. It includes a 45* silicon bend coming off the turbo to an exhaust 1.5" to 2" adapter to a 90* silicon 2.5" coupler to the long straight pipe going up front with a 30* bend.

Seems like nobody makes solutions for going from the tiny output of the turbo to the larger sizes of IC piping. I've always had to piece together a bunch of stuff coming right off the turbo.

I'll try to get some pics.

Well yeah I knows it's not OTS. But I was just wondering what type of Charge pipe I would need. But it sounds like the S14 Charge pipe cause if you look in the Pics. S14 Charge pipe starts w/ a 45* Coupler where as the S13 starts w/ a 90* Coupler. But yeah pics would be nice if at all possible. I've decided that the kids over here playing there little stock boost games need to be shown what boost really is. :p

Not yet. BUT now that you've brought this post to the forefront, if you go up to the first pic, (pic of the Spec clutch), there's my blurb about SBC in that paragraph right above that pic.

ATI Pulley and stock trans mount

Yes, stock trans mount. I want to see how the Nismo motor mounts and stock trans mount compromise feels as far as NVH.

The ATI pulley is something I've been lusting after for a while as well. I believe it will be a key component in maintaining any sort of longevity as boost increases. Hopefully there's a noticeable reduction in NVH in the upper RPMS with this as well. that would be icing on the cake.

At this time I also noticed that my PS pump tightening block and bolt were absent. My PS pump was pulled against the engine block and somehow the belt wasn't slipping, though it was loose enough to simply pull off by hand. This along with a few other things cascaded into a full on maintainence affair aside from just the pulley install.
