Feasability...(a must see)...

I know what this is and where it's from...but this is more of a feasability issue.

:happyfing My flame guards: :happyfing
I got these pics from Venus-Auto. :dancingco
I know it's a Pulsar; I know they're FF. :nono
I know it's a red-top. :embarasse
This is only for shits and giggles...and possibly future applications. :rotflmao
I also know I'm not flame-proof..... :tears

Anyone familiar with the WRX Impreza STi?? The intercooler mounting on it is similar to this one. I've seen tons of cars, and PacRim's S13 up close also, with angled intercooler/radiator mounting (which I'm probably looking at personally doing) but I've never seen this.
It's a Nissan Pulsar with an SR20DET red-top, along with a top-mounted intercooler!! :heyhey

I am pretty anti-rice here in the MidWest...most kids with 240s ask me if I've got an SR, I say no, they say come look at mine, I'm like "I'm busy". How are hood clearance issues? Anyone think they can achieve a similar application? :yummy

I think doing a top mount would be cool if you dont feel like keeping the stock side mount on an sr, or putting front mount...i'd imagine the top mount is the most discreet of the intercooler placing...but would the top mount call for a hood scoop? If so, that would totally defeat the purpose of having the top mount lol

Regardless, I think its cool and it would be interesting to see a similiar install on a 240!

there is very little hood/valve cover clearance with an SR... if you were to try to do a top-mount you'd have to find some way of lowering the engine within the engine bay, which should be done anyways... it sits much too high IMO. There is probably an inch or less clearance between the top of the engine and the hood.

The fuck are you talking about.

Pulsar's are AWD. All gti-r's came stock with top mounts, as well as u12 bluebirds. Not to mention, it is an entirely different motor then a silvia redtop. The gti-r has forged internals and 8.3:1 compression. That motor owns silvia motors.

And you wouldn't "have" to run a top mount, but you'd have heating issues like a bitch. Also, its not too discreat to pop your hood and see a giant top mount like that on the gti-r, just get a fmic and paint it black...

heat goes up....the only reason to do a top mount like that is to be "different". different is cool, but keep in mind its not an efficient setup. just go with the front mount. you would need a giant hood scoop to make it work at all, and that would defeate youre whole purpose for doing it.

heh, luckily all SRs use the same block, and the GTi-R has the same crankshaft, connecting rods, block, main girdle, oil pump, water pump, valvetrain and valves as the normal sr20det in silvias. All SRs have forged internals and low compression so they're really no different.

And yeah, a top-mount setup is silly unless you're a WRX.

agreed. I mean thats kinda like downgrading. Almost everybody with a side mount or a top mount will tend to switch over to FMIC.Do you know how an intercooler works, i mean seriously, why would you want all of that hot air from inside that engine bay. It kind of defeats the purpose unless you run a hood scoop on a 240. (i have seen this and i have to admit it looks extremely homosexual) So no hood scoops! And no top mounts!

lol...I'm not too into what a Pulsar is, I'll admit it.

Besides, an engine mounted from left-to-right (don't mind me for not knowing the terminology here) would have to be FF wouldn't it? For AWD to work it'd have to go back to the transmission, then transfer case and the drive-line all the way back...or am I wrong; is the transfer case weaker? I'll be the first to admit, my knowledge base is just that, a base--deriving from what I've driven and owned...and that definately doesn't include the Pulsar.

Also, I wasn't looking to be efficient, or stealthy, or any of that...just wondering on the feasibility if I chose to be "special" and ride on the short bus...hehe...

Also, thanks for the POSITIVE input guys. ;oD

The pulsar motor is mounted ff, which is why us se-r guys can use it, I myself have an sr20det but its fwd.

Also, the gti-r has lower compression the the other sr20det's. Gti-r = 8.3:1
Also a lot of the parts of the gti-r motor are much different then normal sr20's which is why it is harder to find parts for that motor.

Typical sr = 8.5:1 like my avenir or your silvia motor.

i just finished doing a gti-r swap into a b12 (i think. i know it was a 92 SE-R). that motor owns a stock rwd SRdet. major differences with them. heads are different, block is completely different externally, manifold is different, intake manifold has independent throttle bodies and probably the largest plenum ever mounted on a stock 4 cylinder, 444cc top feed injectors, a MAF almost the size of a Z32's, and the list goes on.

fantastic motor, TONS of fun, even if it is FWD now. I can only imagine how fun the Pulsar is to drive.

just get a water/air intercooler, mount it behind the glove box and call it a day! :D

no IC visible, and they are just as good as air/air setups (proven by a buddy of mine who ran the EXACT same time/mph with a water/air as he did with the air/air, on the same night.. :)

but honestly, that big aluminum smile looks nice on an S13.. I'd just stick with the typical air/air fmic..

erm, putting an intercooler V-Mounted or top mounted has incredible advantages compared to a front mount. For one, you claim that a front mount won't absorb heat from the engine bay, which is totally false. The thing sits right next to the radiator, which is a really hot piece of metal whose sole purpose is to dissipate heat. The radiator vents most of it's heat directly into a FMIC. Also, the FMIC stops the radiator from getting enough air more often than not, which can lead to overheating. True, in order to take full advantage of a top or v-mount intercooler, you need some kind of slat in the hood so air can run across it, but it doesn't have to be a scoop. Your valve cover dissipates FAR less heat than your radiator.

Wow ... you must know some idiots when they mount their FMIC. Just about every turbo 240 I have seen photos of and up close has a gap between the radiator and the FMIC to allow the air to get in there. Then I know of many a turbo car who change out the radiator for a more efficient one and then set up with oil coolers and all sorts of shit. There is also a reason why just about every pro race car that has a turbo, has a FMIC.

I took a ride in my friend's WRX Wagon a few weeks ago, and that engine bled heat from the block like a bitch. The WRX has a massive hood scoop on that bitch. I am stickin with the FMIC when I go turbo. Scares the shit out of some people when they see it, or they cream their pants when they see one (mostly just ricers). And if you paint a FMIC, you reduce the efficiency of the cooler. Leave it alone. If you want a black one, buy it from the factory in that color, don't do it yourself unless you know the exact procedure.

In rally circles (1992) the GTiR intercooler was known as the "interwarmer". Overheating was one of the main reasons Nissan failed in its WRC attempts. They tried to fix it by giving the GTiR one of the biggest area bonnet scoops ever seen on a car but it didnt really help.
i was just gonna mention that. i always call them interwarmers, even on the sti, although it doesnt suffer alot from the same form of heat soak that the GTiR ALL WHEEL DRIVE beast (not FF like someone mentioned).

fuck these cars are fast.. their 1320 is as quick as an r33 skyline.

doesnt that make it the fastest sport compacth hatch in the world?

is the HF integrale, or the Suzuki Swift AWD turbo faster?
theres gotta be one thats faster in stock form in the same price range.. Renault Clio V6?

who saw the FifthGear episode where a tuned GTiR spanks the GTS-R viper?
baby godzilla :) i love it

im wondering whether or not i should import one when i get the cash
