I'd check the lever. Make sure there's no slack in the cable leading to the spring release.

1. The cable doesn't have enough tension.

2. The latch in the back isn't working properly.

Just have someone pull up on the hatch while you pull the lever. Get it open and watch the release latch while someone pulls the lever.

 

spray some wd-40 in the keyhole. Did the trick for me
