I'm On The Quest For The Perfect Race Car

Well, I have always wanted to race cars, but have been to young. I am turning 17 in March and maybe my parent will support me (SBD) after that. They don't really have any objection to me going to auto X events, but I want to race at a track. Track racing, as I hear, is really expensive. This is why I need to be SBD (Sponsored By Dad). I have a s13 with sr20, but it isnt fully ready for "racing." It has all the normal goodies (Coilover, exhaust, new intercooler, wheels, z32 brakes). It's my only car so it is a daily driver (probably 100-150 miles a week). I want to start racing this car, but I dont want to race my daily driver because if something breaks, I will be skrewd.

So here is my ideal race car (possible drift car): ...I just have to find it!

I want something that has a full cage and harness's so if/when I crash, I will still be alive to race again. It needs to be fairly cheap (sub $10k). I don't want that FWD crap and AWD is to expensive and to many moving parts to keep in check. I would like it to have a fair amount of power and weight very little (250-300hp with sub 2400lbs). It will have no A/C, no glass (plexi-galss), no PS, no power anything, no interior, no....anything basically. Just a motor, seat, wheels, gauges, and cage. Now I know what you're saying "you just described a track 240. Turn your car into a race car and buy an economy civic and save gas" This is a great plan but, I dont want to drive a civic. I still want to drive my s13, but I want something that will teach me the fundamentals of driving skill.
I think I may have found what I dream of. I checked on EBAY for some old beaten up race cars and I stumbled upon some worn out NASCAR chassis. They incredibly cheap to. I am talking like $3k for everything except the motor. This would be the perfect starting point. I mean, It is has one of the strongest cages known to man and it was built by professional race car builders. It will be super strong and the suspension (if it has any) will be really really stiff (not ideal for road racing, but I am sure if I called the manufacturer of the suspension, they will be happy to refit me with different springs and shocks with the same mounting point for fairly cheap ($1000 ish?) The body is fantastically ugly but it is just fiberglass, so I could just refit another cars body panels on it or just race with no body panels, that would be so cool! The chassis would be super light (I think) because all there is in the body is piping (tube chassis) For the motor problem, I could swap for a rev happy straight six (rb25 or 2jze) or a V6 from a 300zx. The wireing would be a beotch, but I could literally just buy a salvaged car that I took the motor from and rip out all of the electrical and chassis harness. That way, all the plugs would line up and the motor would run. I want to do 90% of the work so this will be a great learning experience with building custom cars. Any thoughts on other "do it yourself" race cars with alot of go, turn, and stop but with little dough?

Actually, I was saying you just described a turbo Miata. You can get a NA-body 1.8l Miata for real cheap. Get a turbo or supercharger kit (there are tons of them), do some weight reduction, and dominate everything on the track. Even with the stock suspension the Miata is a track and autocross monster. Your best bet is probably checking Miata forums like on Miata.net and you can probably find one on sale that already has the cage and mods.

The miata sounds like a great car. How flexible is their chassis? If I put in a cage, will it still flex on me?

you're all on the wrong track. If you want the BEST racing experience money can buy (but still cheap), buy a used shifter kart and start racing. You can get a decent race prepped cart for 3-4 grand basically new, tires are maybe $200 a set for slicks, and maintenance is incredibly cheap.

Most CART, F1, NASCAR and Le Mans drivers grew up karting, and theres a reason for that.

You may laugh, but shifter karts are scary fast. Most 125cc karts will go up to about 120mph (can't say that for most 240s), pull 3-4g on the skidpad, and will literally break your ribs if you dont use the correct protective gear. They're easier to store, easier and cheaper to maintain than cars, and will teach you mroe out of the box about driving than a car.

Think about it, I know I have.

I have thought about shifter cars for a long time. The one big draw back to having one, is where would I race it? I will most likely be moving back to SC next year and the only people that race carts are ********. They have shifter carts without the shifter. They race on a dirt oval about 150 feet from end to end. Will a shifter car really teach me correct car control? I mean if they pull 4g's on a skidpad and, being the novic I am, I will definatly not push it to the limits. How will I learn to keep my car "on the edge of traction" if traction is basically never ending? I am not throwing out the ideal of a cart, but I need to do a little research on where in the southeast I will be able to race and when.

Being from SC I can vouch for this... So sad, but yet so true. Where about in SC? But as DudeOfBeauty said... Check out my thread "Plans for the Miata so far...". We've had some detailed discussions on the Miata as well as posted some pics and such. Miata.net is a GREAT place to gather info and such. I would look into it seriously... Get a cheap NA-chassis 1.8L and throw a 99-00 head on it bolt up a turbo setup with some forged internals and hold on for the ride of your life. Starting out at around 2200lbs... You can't ask for much more when you can easily make ~300RWHP and still have a car that handles like it's on rails. :D

I agree with you on that rexbo. My friend use to kart when he was younger, and now from the experience he got from that he's extremely scary on the tracks. IMHO I think AutoX is gay and retarted! To me going around cones in a parking lot and hardly going out of 2nd gear seems worth my money and time. On a positive note about autox it's cheap as hell! Compared to HPDE, but then again HPDE events you race on a real race track. A typical fee for a HPDE event is around 150-350 depending on which track you go to. You would also need a SA rated helmet. I know in AutoX they'll let you get away with a M rated helmet. Only difference between a SA rated and a M rated helmet is that the M rated isn't fire proof, and the SA is.

What class do you want to race in? There is no use building up anything if it doesnt meet the race authority standards. If it fails just one they wont let you on the track.
What he said. :thumbsup

I'm from Charleston SC and where I go to watch my buddy race carts is in Ridgeville SC (about 45min north of Charleston) I wasn't particullarly thinking of racing in a certain class, but just go out and "race." I just want to go and learn driving skills, but not have the pressure of bumper to bumper since I have never even been on a track. I will definatly look deeper into this miata thing, it sounds perfect. Light, fast, affordable. What else could you ask for?
