I can open up the tailgate, but not the fuel door. The problem is that one of the plastic pieces that clips to the fuel door latch broke. Unfortunately, this part is no longer available new. Your only choice is to buy used 30+ year old cables at exorbitant prices that are likely to suffer the same fate (probably sooner than later).
All of this has me wondering whether there is a cable from another Nissan model might work. Maybe one that is available new. Or at least something from a more common model that can be cheaply purchased at the local Pick and Pull. Has anyone had any luck finding alternatives that work?
