Ive been in love with the 240sx performance and style but ive been lookin around and i see that a 1996 maxima gxe does 14.9 on 1/4 mile and 1995 does 15.2. Are they really that much faster then a 240sx. I heard that they have a big aftermarket also. The thing is that i really dont like the looks of the maxima and only a couple body kits look decent. Im really stuck on which one i should get.

no a maxima is not that much faster that a 240....although it has a v6 and w/ FI it will rape most 240's on the street...It comes down to what your purpose for the car is really. The maxima is more of a family sedan and the 240 is more of a sporty car. both can be pretty fast tho.

The decision between a Maxima and a 240 is all about what you need it for. The 240 basically has no back seat and not much room to put stuff into. The maxima fits 5 people without a problem and has a decent size trunk. The 240 is going to handle much better being smaller, lighter and rear wheel drive. Both cars can be made to be fast. Custommaxima.com sells a stage 1 turbo kit that make 305 whp, not bad for a family sedan. I sold me '97 Maxima to buy my 240. I liked the maxima but I always wanted a 240. So you need to decide what your needs are and choose the car that fits those needs. You can't go wrong with either car.

Stock 240 vs. stock 95-99 maxima the maxima will win in the 1/4 mile.
The 5-speeds run mid 15s in stock trim

i too sold a '98 maxima to buy a 240 but the reason was that i didnt want a car payment. If you say a 240 is just as fast as the maxima or not that much faster, i guess you havent raced one lately. Also, there are a few turbo maximas in the Atlanta area that can out run "sports" cars. i now of 2 turboed maximas that are pushing at least 350Whp in Atl.

Yea it is so easy to modify a maxima rather then 240sx. I liked the 240sx so much but this guy with a y-pipe, a b-pipe and a custom exhaust gains like 25+ hp on his 95 maxima and runs like 14.8 but on Jeff's 95 240sx has a t3/t4 turbo and all these other goodies pushin 230hp and he runs 14.8. So confused!!!!

i sold my 91 to get an s14
my 240 would destroy my max off the line but i had the vg in it
the ve's and vq's would own any 240 stock for stock
the 3rd gen maximas were full indepedent suspension back then so it acutally handled itself pretty well. nothing compared to a 240 though. all the newer ones have gotten pretty hefty and until 2004 had a beam axle rear.
i think both are fun to drive, comes down to what ya need
im just a college kid so what the hell do i need space for

a 5 speed 4th gen max with i/h/e and chip can run a mid 14 second pass. try doin that in a non turbo KA with the same mods. with those same mods that would put in the 15's. still around 1 whole second off. stock max's run 15's to high 14's. stock 240's run's how 16's to high 15's. you see the difference here?

i've always had a problem with chosing a maxima and another car. i just did not get one because i ended up getting a 240 in the begginng of the month. I really had to decide hard because its a sleeper if you ask me. I really liked it because I have a friend that uses 75 shot laughing gas and its pretty damn fast. I bet it would smoke my old talon tsi, which i thought it was scary when he first used his laughing gas. The maxima is a hella nice car, just that i believe is that it will be much more expensive than a 240sx. hard decision though...good lucky man

and yet, you can easily turbo a maxima without redoing the internals and shoot a 100 shot of nos with no problem

I'm sorry...but both turbo AND 100HP shot on stock internals....can you give me some proof here....I have been into cars for a long and this does not sound right.....

Welcome to the boards...im in kennesaw too we should meet up some time.

Ya maxima's are getting pretty popular here. especially the older (95 or so) models. Those things w/ a supercharger or turbo are sweet cars.

If your going to get a Maxima and mod it, go with a newer 2003, in the UConn Car Club there was a meet this weekend and a guy showed up with his Maxima, its pushing insane HP with a 200 shot, and will be pushing insane HP once he has the Turbo kit on it. The engine itself has a good amount of potential (after all its the 350Z engine)

I have both a 00 maxima 5 speed and a 96 240sx auto...My maxima is highly modified, whereas my 240sx is my new project car.

Right now, my maxima will rape my 240sx...me and my girlfriend race all the time and I beat her by very large margins every time.

My goal with the 240sx is to make my maxima the bitch ;) and then after that point, it's on to taking out my dad's STi :)

Well, it's a tough call. Thed Maxima was meant to haul around families in style, and for that they needed to drop a decent amount of HP in it.
Try running a 14.0 second 1/4 mile with your wife in the passenger, ur kids in the back, and granny in the trunk. I don't think you'll be hitting 14's.
When Nissan made the 240, they forgot about the anatomical differences between Japanese people and Americans, so we get lucky because we gut our back seats, and shave some weight :)..

But yeah, Maxima's were built to have brute power but with the family in mind, whereas 240's are meant to have a balance of everything that a sports enthusiast would want.

Hahaha, imagine a Japanese father taking his kids to school doing 120 on the freeway in a Maxima.

good choice
I guess I could put in my .02 since I do have a 96 Max and a 240. I ran a 14.9 without even a filter for a mod, bone stock. I have the GXE5 spd so it's the lightest. It's fun to beat "sport" cars with a 4dr. I ran a 75 shot and could pull on the first c5's. Without me in the car it weighed 2900 lbs. Of course the 75 shot was fun but now i'm going turbo. I'm just now getting it tuned, so I'm not sure how much faster it will be.

The 240 on the other hand feels way slower even with my stock max. but the 240 handles way better. I really shouldn't compare it but the 240 with Tein feels awsome compared to some dropped springs on the Max. In fact I just drove the max last night and it felt like a boat.

I'm selling the max because I'm buying a house but I hope some of the money goes into the 240. I'd go with the 240 and boost the crap out of it.

Plus you can't Drift in a Max =)

light weight+RWD+PWR=killer sleeper.
