Megasquirt Install a Success

As some of you guys know I was implementing Megasquirt for the CA, aparently it looked like I'm the first to take a stab at it. I am pleased to say that we got her started last night and amazingly the motor just sounds insane (no exhaust hooked up).
One of the first things I must say is how incredibly EASY it is to install and get megasquirt running. I would say the hardest part of the conversion is the trigger wheel, VR bracket for the trigger wheel, and assembling megasquirt (not hard just a good 8 hrs).

As for the harness I built it myself, and only needed to splice into the fuel pump harness in the engine bay, and one of the power wires inside the cabin. The rest just went from megasquirt to the sensors.

Some of you guys I talked to on AIM knew I tried to start it up thursday and aparently no go called it a night since it was 2am. Saturday rolls around we give it a crack, Megatune helped us diagnose the problem being something was taking power away from megasquirt, so everytime I tried cranking it megasquirt would restart. Once we got that straighten out the ***** fired up first try.

So just wanna let everyone know megasquirt is now another option for us CA guys, probably the best standalone for the price. For around $400 you can have a powerful standalone that most other tuning system cant compare.

I just got my stock CA swap started today. This my first nissan project. Being a former neon enthusiast I am pretty formiliar with the megasquirt. Lots of neon owners use it. It is an awsome unit for the price. Also anyone else who wants to use this, You can get the megasquirt pre-assembled at rs-autosport.com. It will save you the 8 hour build time.lol
Glad to see these units expanding in the auto industry.
Good luck with some high HP numbers.

lol
I can't sit still for 8 hours to do it.
I would have to fork out the money.
more power to you if you can though.
congrats on the install

gratsi,

I actually enjoy doing soldering. LOL you dont have to sit their and do it for 8 hours straight its ok to take a break or do little a day. I need a video camera so I can post videos.

I don't know much about this system but I'm interested in learning more. What all did you need to install on your car and was the megasquirt compatible with the stock sensors? if so/not is it compatible with aftermarket sensors? what sensors are required for it to run? can it eliminate the mafs? do you use a laptop to tune and if so is there a good graphical interface for tuning?
and why do you need a "kit" I have heard ppl talk about building one from scratch... wouldn't that be a lot cheaper?
thats all the questions i can think of right now. good job getting it running though.

All I needed was the Megasquirt ECU, custom wiring harness, sensors, and the FORD EDIS components.

You can use the stock sensors, I have kept the coolant sensor but opted for the GM open element sensor as it responds better to boosted motors.

You can use any sensor as long as you know the resistance values.

You need Coolant, Intake Air Tempature, TPS, Ignition setup, optional O2.

Megasquirt utilizes a MAP sensor so MAF is eliminated.

You tune via Laptop, Megaview.

The tuning software is amazing and its free.

Its the same price if you piece it together or buy a kit. I prefer the kit because everything is their and sometimes they add extra goodies.

They also assembled kits where all the work is done for you, you just attach the sensors and run.

its sounding like I'll be going megasquirt soon! I want to get a stack gauge cluster and use the stack sensors so I can elmiinate the factory stuff and make my own milspec wiring harness. tired of working around the factory crap.

Megasquirt allows you to keep your gauge cluster, theirs only 1 wire that goes to your cluster and thats for the tach. Your speedo is wired straight to your speedo sensor on the tranny. reach me on AIM if you have any questions.

pumaking, got my pulley and trigger wheel done yesterday, had all the tools in the shop just had to learn how to use them, we turned down the middle belt section on the pulley, then milled out the trigger wheel to slide onto the pulley, the guy i had do it had his calipers off a little so it fits way to loose, but i will be fixing it with a keyway and setscrew, or weld on some material then turn it down again to get the fit tight enough to need a press fit again. ill grab some pictures tomorrow. Also started fabrication of my dashboard, and hope to begin wiring my motor and chassis all up next week. Everything is going on toggles on the dashboard, it went from simple turbo upgrade 2 months ago to full blown race car build. ill be getting pictures commning in and hopefully make some progress soon.

awesome man let me know if you need any help. I'm almost finished that I can start driving it for once. I bought a GT28R and trying to install it today or tomorrow but its raining so probably tomorrow.

I took a test drive on the shitty base map which is actually just to get the car started and to my surprise the motor was quite smooth beside that it sounds like a V8 lol. Oh well this week should finally have a decent tune.

I was reading through your write up on nico and kicking myself for selling the escort that I was parting out a year or two ago.

Was it a 1.9L from 1991-1995 the 1.8L didnt have EDIS. Plus you wouldnt of gotten much for the parts as they are cheap to begin with unless you wanted to go Megasquirt.

Set the crank pulley at TDC which is the 2nd notch from the left.

I put the missing tooth in that Vicinity. Than staring at the front of the motor count 9 teeth to the left counter clockwise, when you get to the 9th tooth thats where the sensor goes.

You dont have to have it exactly like mine you can even have the missing tooth on the bottom that way you can use the A/C mounting holes to make a VR sensor, the only important part is that the tooth is counted to 9 and that the motor is exactly at TDC.

Heres my pic as you can see the pulley is set at TDC and count the 9 teeth and I marked it.

I just picked up all my edis parts today for $40 (except the plug wires, they were tearing and I'm probaby better off getting new ones anyway), but I can't get the damn ring off the crank pulley. I put it in the freezer and I'm gonna try heating the ring, maybe that will work.

cool. i was wondering who that was. seems noones really interested in the megasquirt yet as a viable option. im finishing the VR mount this afternoon, then im going to be droping in the motor and should talk my electronics guy into wiring it up next week so i can get it running again.

oh and one of these days ill sign my AIm account off in the back office, i see you left me a few messages, i rarely use AIM anymore.

yea not many people are considering it all because of boost boy, but it seems to be picking up steam in the Nissan community. I go to the megasquirt forum and see a bunch of nissan guys using it.

Oh well hopefully soon I can finally get my car finished and dyno I just installed a GT28R and I'm hoping to hit 300whp and if we do I'm sure everyone on the CA forum will go nuts.
