Technically, there's no such thing as OBD-I. People just use that term to refer to anything before OBD-II. There was no standardization.

The 240sx was OBD-II compliant in 1995.

OBD-II was an American requirement, I've never heard it mentioned regarding the JDM models.

 

well...I know for a fact that the R34 skyline is OBD II, hence the price jump.

 

From Motorex (emphasis mine):

The new VQ may in fact be OBD-II compliant, though. Nissan uses that engine in a lot of cars, and it's probably simpler from a manufacturing standpoint to just build them all that way.

95? I thought 96 was the first year they had OBD-II. If its 95 then my plans for an RB swap are f***ed.

 

I'm pretty sure that the 240 was switched in 1995. That's based on a couple of papers I've read, as well as compatability listings for OBD-II tuning devices.

Perhaps someone with a 1995 FSM can clear this up.

 

So...SR20's are non-OBD?

 

I doubt any of them are OBD-II. They may have a primitive OBD system, though, like the pre-1995 USDM cars.

Im not sure which month it was but some 240's in 95 made before a certain month were pre-obd-II.

Thanks for the link. This isn't good news. In Chicago they test your ECU for OBD-II compliance, so that means I can't have a SR or RB swap in there and pass emissions test because of the ecu test. pinoyclass, where did you hear that about the 95s?

 

I don't remember where I read it but the different production date was feb 94 - july 95. anything after that is obd-II. someone correct me if im wrong.

 

That info is wrong I have never seen a 95 model with OBD II. 96 models came with OBD II that is why some 96-98 owners switch tothe 95 OBD I system. Stubby

cars were onbly required to have OBD-II on '96+ models. even if the '95 240sx had OBD-II it wasn't required too. if you swap an sr into a '95 you should be alright. i'd check with the DMV first of course.

I don't have a 240sx. I'm driving a modded sentra right now, I want to get a 240sx and swap in the RB25DET, thats why I was researching about the OBD-II, if I had the car I think I would know what it is.

 

So, just get a 89-94 240...

 

I dont like the s13 bodystyle (Puts on flamesuit). I think the S14 looks way better, this car will be a daily driver and I don't want to be driving a 12-second sleeper I already have that with my Sentra, I really like the S14 with the Vertex kit so thats what I want to do.

Your info is wrong no matter how much you show me I have seen with my own eyes several 95 240's witout OBD II I have yet to see a 95 with OBD II. You show me a 95 240 with a OBD II then I will believe you but just showing me info dosen't change my mind since I have seen it with my own eyes...Stubby

Doesnt the 2nd O2 sensor denote having OBD2? I know this is how it is on Honda's (96+) and some other cars. Ive seen 96,97,98 240s with both O2 sensors. I havent looked under the hood of a 95 yet.

 

Yes, the second O2 sensor usually means OBD-II. There's no other reason for it to be there, that I can think of.

I was just chatting with Daunttless, he had a 1995, it was OBD-II.

 

My cousin's 1991 JDM B16A1 came with two O2 sensors
as do various other JDM engines before 1995.

So, if OBD II is just an american requirement, how come
these engines already had two O2 sensors by 1989?

Isn't one of them for the cat over-heat?

 

the first O2 sensor measures oxygen/fuel levels before the cat, the 2nd one really doesnt do crap, just making sure the cat cleans it up more.

Where was the 2nd O2 on that B16 and what car was it swapped into? Japan doesnt have emissions like that as stated above, now they do but not 10 years ago. Only reason I see it would have 2 O2 sensors was it the engine was swapped into a 96+ civic, where they just modified the stock wireharness to accept the engine.

 

There really are two O2 sensors and their both located on the header.

Just look at any JASMA or JDM headers (for Honda, anyways)
You'll notice two holes.

Same thing for the GSR, except one's located right before
the cat itself not on the headers.
