simplest way for 200-230rwhp?

Ok so I have been browsing around the 240sx performance sites for some good info and products.

now my real question would be what is the real easiest way for for a streetable 200-230ish HP

I came down to a few options

just got with SR and throw on a high flow cat, new fuel pump and a 3inch cat back exhaust system, new nismo mounts.

or turbo the KA, do exhuast and new fuel pump and etc. but the KA will only rev to about 6krpm where as the SR goes to about 8krpm, which gives you more horse through the RPMs which is a major plus.

the other option would just be doing a 50 shot dry or wet of N02 on the KA, throw on a new fuel pump, 2.5 inch catback exhuast, maybe even new cams, pully kit, remove AC (my ac doesnt work anyways) and just beef up all the electrical.

and to all of these I would throw on NGK plugs and wires, a koyo radiator with electric fans to free up HP from the mechanical ones.

if I make a stupid mistake of what I mentioned above, please correct me.
I'm still just doing my research, so gimmie gimmie gimmie feedback.

umm the SR redlines at 7500 and the dohc ka redlines at 6900 on an s13 and 6500 on an s14. I think sohc ka is also 6500.

The simplest way is just n2o. I don't like it though, I'd rather spend the money and have a nice turbo set up. Ka or sr? Your choice, your preference.

The simplest and cheapest way is nitrous. If you can install an amplifier you can run nitrous lines and make the connections.

turbo the ka, I have nothing against nitrous but it sounds to me like you want to have fun around town. Nitrous would work for thought. Nitrous companies advise not to use the product in 4th-5th gears and you wo'nt get traction off the line so there gose 1stgear, If you use it when ever your bored or getting on the interstate you'll find yourself filling up ever two three days and thats only $35 everytime you fill up. Nitrous is great for drag racing and thats about it. turbo the Ka. It won't nessesarily be any cheaper but it requires no engine swap and no bottle.

i never knew s14's hade 6500redline

Forget N20 = Very hard on motor, could destroy internals

Engines to eliminate:

RB26DETT, RB25DET and VG30DETT To expensive, to much work

S15 Blacktop, S14 Blacktop Not worth the extra $$$ for added base hp
VVT is bitch to work with

Engine to go with:

SR20DET Redtop, CA18DET, RB20DET, KA24DET

Easily to swap in or turbocharge and built up boost for the $$$

Other engines:

SR20DET Blacktop get only if it is a good deal (same engine as redtop,

just different valve cover)

KA24ET KA24DET is better, 2 cams are better than one

300 would be too much for a daily driver, but a piggy back, fmic would be a good idea...
but you can get 14.5 psi out of the stock turbo?

now turboing my KA is costing just as much as an SR, sometimes more expensive.

I do plan this for pretty much night on the town, but if I was to use N02, i would not use it until 2nd gear and maybe in 3rd.

and If I'm going to do a swap I'm going SR20, not ca18 (not because I hate it, cause I don't) I just can't go fro 2.4 lt to 1.8, and the RB's are just heavy and throws off the 50/50 weight distribution.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the KA-T, but i'd be afraid of putting too much strain on the engine when I would step on it.

also getting around emissions will be tough with an SR or possibly tough with KA-T.

and there is a different between SR black top and red top, the black top is supposed to be harder to modify and also has something different with the valves, I can't think of what it was right now, but it does add about 10 more horse in the s14 version.

yes, you can get up to 1 bar (or 14.5psi) out of a stock T25. Either turbo what you've got or pick up a redtop sr, i'm sure you'll be happy either way. take into account that if you have emissions nazis in your state or not and weigh that in your decision. also, how much $$$ do you plan to spend? achieving that kind of horsepower is relatively simple but its gonna set you back quite a few bills. just my 2 cents.

I'm not so sure how the emission nazis' are in IL, but somehow my old corolla with cracks in my 'header' managed to pass with flying color, and I kid you not it was cracked, I seafoamed the thing and the white smoke came out of not only the exhuast (which it is supposed to) but also out the engine bay. heh

and I'm looking for about spending 3 grand or 3500 the most.

3500 is enough for a swap. But you might wanna have some extra money on hand just in case.
yeah I'd make sure of it so I wouldnt be with out the car till the next paycheck or something.

I know boostdesigns has the stage 1 kit, but i'd probably do stage 1 and upgrade the fuel pump/filter/injectors (50lb) I'm just unsure if I want to buy from them quite yet (no offense) but the last new vendor kinda put a bad impression onto the boards...
but thats still just the one 'company' also has anyone purchased anything from boostdesigns.

oh my KA has 108k miles with engine service/tune up at 107k, or so, miles.

and most likely I will be installing the parts myself either alone or with several car nerd buddies.

also the boost design kit had intake and their exhuast system, but I already got my own intake and soon I may do the battery relocate to the other side as well as the washer fluid/motor and create the custom CAI.

You want the simplest way for 200 to 230whp?

Turbo the KA. Plain and simple.

Go find a turbo. Take any old t3/t4 hybrid you find. t3/t4 50-trim .48a/r exaust would give you excellent spool up times. Go to any competent car shop. Give them the turbo and ask them to make an exhaust manifold. Then get an 8:1, 9:1 or 10:1 FMU. Then the last thing you need is an intercooler. I'd find a decent front mount if you can. BoostDesigns.com offers one so that you don't have to modify any of the bumper support, so that would be the simplest choice.

Go back to that competent auto shop and ask them to make some piping for your intercooler.

You'll probably need a boost guage, or the right wastegate.. Then just set the boost at about 7psi.

That should get you right at about 200whp, or real darn close.

That is the SIMPLEST way to get there. Then, 6 months down the road... go bigger injectors, bigger fuel pump, and some way to tune it (s-afc, emanage, etc). Then you can turn it up to 12psi and get your 230 or 240whp that you really want.

Simple.

Yeah before you go about goin crazy on the ka I'd run a compression test first and make sure everything is top notch because turboing will only put more stress on an engine which may already be in pain.

#23 ·
even though the ka project and the sr project would roughly cost the same, by going the ka, ur already with better internals and a better turbo after you're done. so a lil bit more mods and you're boosting out your ass. where as the sr will probably be a less work, but down the line you gonna wanna get rid of that iddy biddy turbo.

Well that was already planned, where though? I have no idea.

Any auto shop IE Tuffy or something can test this?

and can you truley get 12psi outa the stock internals?

#25 ·
You can test compression yourself in your driveway. A kit is kinda pricey (Anywhere from $50 to $150+) although it is a good investment. I think autozone might let you borrow theirs because they have this really nice tool lending service, not sure about compression testers but I'd give it a try.
