streached tires? for drift

so i've read a bit about drifters putting "Streached" tires on wider rims, for drifting, any truth to this? i've heard they do it to give better slipping contact around the edge of the tire, (you know where you wear normal tires out on the corner between the sidewall and the tread) i remember reading somewhere that people do this so the ture is already curved there, ... is there any truth to this? or is my misinformation great?

so where can i buy streached tires, i imagine i cant strech my current tires, nor would i want to, theyre too grippy, but it might be the cheapest way to properly fix my clearance and grip issues. also, what are they called? just streached tires? or do they have a specific name that will make it easier to find them?

my wheels are 17x8.5 4x114.3 +20 would i streach 195s? or 205s?

#10 ·
Ummm yeah, you arent serious with 17x8.5s are you?

I had 225/45/18 stretched ona 10.5" wide rim... they were too stretched, kept popping off the bead... I now have 265/35/18 on the same rim, it has a little stretch, looks much better...

Stretched tires only look good on wide ass rims. That way, when you stretch the tires to say about 255, it still looks nice and wide and stretched. if you have 205 stretched tires, it looks so gay cuz the tire from the back looks so small and tiny.

let's do a little math...

8.5 X 25.4 (number of millimeters in an inch) is aproximately 215 millimeters (this would be the 'matched' size tire to the wheel size)

from there you should determine how much of a stretch you want in the tire, so start going down in the sizes....205 would have a half a centimeter of inward stretch on both sides of the tire...a 195 would have one centimeter of stretch on both sides of the tire...etc

don't expect stretching you tires to make you 3 times better at drifting than you were before... a lot of people just do it for style now anyways

also, a stretch on 17x8.5 would look silly...you're probably already sunken enough as it is

225/45/17 looks stretched.

For you, you'd probably want a 215/40/17

If you don't have suspension and spacers to make your wheels flush, and tuck the top part of the tire, forget it, it'll look really gay.

Tires good for stretching IMO: Have the wheel protective lip thing built into the tire.

also, it would be more cost effective than ordering new rims and tires again, as i just did. i dont like my tires, but i dont mind the rims, if i can streach a thinner tire onto the rims, i will get the clearance i need. also the only things i havent done on my susp so far is coils and sway bars. lca's are en-route, and everything else is adj. tube steel

ok.
I stretch 215/40 r17 on my 17x9's and i love the way they feel for drifting! A lot more predicatble. I think you should jsut sell that whole combo you have and start over! I told youthat in your previouse thread! If you just want to go smaller in diameter go for the 205's, ive seen those on an 9 in rim before, should look ok on an 8. fed's stretch pretty nice and they are cheap. try those

feds? what are feds?
also, so are 205's the general consensus? if you streach 205s on 9s, they should look about the same on my 8.5s, right? also, my rims already stick out a bit, i think if i run streached 205s, my tread should almost line up perfect with my fender,

I have mine stretched a bit. I am running 15x8 rims with a negative offset.
I have 205 50's in the rear right now and 195 50's in the front. When I drift at a event, I run steelies with 185-195 that are 60-70 seeries. I just buy used tires so i can waste them that day. I dont change my fronts at the track.

REARS 205, 50's on 15x8 negative offset

^someone said " if you have 205 stretched tires, it looks so gay cuz the tire from the back looks so small and tiny." IMO, 240sx is a small car.

so i am thinking of a 205/40R17, streached over 8.5s, is this too drastic? or should i go with 205/45R17s, or 205/50sR17? it dosent seem like it would be much more of a curve than ericcastrado pics show, i just want to make sure my rubbing problem is solves, so i figured 40s, can i streach a 205/40 over an 8.5 rim?. any suggestions?

#24 ·
lmao, sorry, i didn't even realize i was spelling it like that, i am typing too fast.

#26 ·
what about 45s? i just wanna make sure they clear the back of my wheel well, and i am not back at square one...

#27 ·
If you run 205/40R17 youll be at the same diamter as stock, a tiny bit bigger. If you go with feds, it will run you about 45 bucks a tire from citytireonline.com. That would probable be the best suited tire for you. Dont worry about how stretched your tire is, run the size tire that best suites your needs!

sounds like a good enough idea, i'll do some research and let you guys know how i am going to fix this, thanks for the information and advice.

MWA HAHAHA, (with pics)

so after searchin g for about 35 minutes to even finda a place to do it, i got someone to mount 205/45R17s on my D2's they're a 8.5 inch rim and i cant wait til theyre broken in, so i can see how she works, i just got them put on about an hour ago, now pics....

I also got my Azenis mounted onto my old rims, so i can swap them on if i feel like getting sticky.

now i just need to slam it, add sway bars, and brakes. and then i can focus on the powertrain
