Strut Tower Rust.

Hi, I've been looking to buy a 240 for about 4 months now and have found one somewhat close, and reasonably priced, i have been in contact with him the past week. I've been researching about rusted strut towers for the past couple hours but haven't found what I want. Obviously every case of rust is different but I was hoping someone with more experience than me (none), could offer me their opinion on how to fix it ( just surface rust?), or any idea on how much it would cost.

Sorry I had to start a new thread for something so small, couldn't find a home for it. Is there a "quick question" thread I couldn't see?

Thanks

Sorry, it's the only picture I've got from him. Might be able to get more.

If its just surface rust then use a wire brush on a air grinder bust that shit off prime and paint. If it's gone through the metal then find a donor car cut and weld. The cut and weld part I wouldn't recommend if you have no experience and I'm sure a shop would want a purdy penny. But from the pic it doesn't look to bad.

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

I guess start grinding/scraping and see where it takes me? In the event i start having to really go into the metal, any ideas on what a cut-out and weld in a new section might cost (done professionally)? Clearly it's not nearly as bad as some cars, but i imagine it can still be a difficult job considering the structural importance.

Your strut tower rust looks almost identical to mine except mine looked like surface rust but when I start poking at it the rust ended up being all the way through in some spots. One area I would say is a good idea to check, which I didnt until I got the car home, is right behind the front wheels in the wheel well around where the brake line goes into the wheel well and into the engine bay. I poked at some rust there and found out it was worse then I had thought originally. Try to find someone you know who can weld. I am lucky enough to have several friends that have TIG welders and experience with it. The rust out on my 240sx and FC Rx7 are both getting done for free.

Those two spots do not look really bad at all. As far as quotes from a shop, they will probably charge you about 4 hours of labor max for just that. I would check every wheel well, the underside and interior. If you see cracked undercoating, then assume rust behind it. If it is just surface rust then you can get a cheap angle grinder, some attachments and some spray paint for under $30. The angle grinder can remove undercoating too
