The fastest you could go??

Hi,

I'm still deciding between a 1995 Civic and a 1995 240sx SE,but If I do end up with a 240sx I was just wondering what do you think the lowest you could make them run in the quarter mile with out doing a engine swap and still be a daily driver?I not just talking N/A,I'm talking if I slapped a turbo kit on it and nitrous and other aftermarket parts on.so what do you think the lowest ET you could go?Any info will be greatly appreciated!

Well, many people have done the turbo/engine swap debate before, so it's not something I will argue here after this one point: you will spend about the same amount on an engine swap as you will on a turbo kit for the KA24DE. Remember, you can't simply slap a turbo on there, you have to:
Reprogram or get a new ECU
Upgrade fuel (pump, injectors, etc.)
New MAFS would be ideal
New Exhaust
Intercooler, these are usually not included in 1st stage turbo kits
I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting

You may be able to find one or the other for a little cheaper, but all in all they are about the same.

Advantage to the turbo kit: more horsepower out of the box. You know how your engine has been treated and that, currently, it runs.

Advantage to engine swap: all of it is debatable, many people seem to think that it is more reliable at higher horsepower. Just be sure to do the rocker arm stopper mod, and you're good to go. Higher RPM's and the gearbox is better. Also, despite common beliefs, the SR has a higher torque/hp ratio (IIRC, I did the math on it one day), it just occurs at higher RPMs than the KA.

Yeah, I know. It's the best I could afford for now, but I'll have another RWD car within the next year or so. I used to have a 12 second Mustang and I miss having it, so I have had a good taste of driving a fun RWD car. Say what you will, but that car handled pretty well with the mods, had enough power to get in trouble in under 5 seconds on most roads, and the sound of the exhaust is second to none. It's a crappy story why I had to sell it and I won't waste my time telling it here. I want to build something different for my next nice car so I'm trying my hand at 240's.

Oh yeah, you are probably wondering why I have a brand new car if "this is the best I could afford". I was delivering pizza's with a '98 Altima to pay for the Mustang and the value of the car sank faster than the loan did so the 1.9% financing looked very attractive to get rid of that Alty and the negative equity. I got an internship, quit Papa John's, and bought the Spec V.

It was a '91 5spd 5.0 hatchback. Long story short is that I owned the Mustang, was upside down on the Altima, and couldn't afford to keep both at the time so the Mustang was the only one I could let go unfortunately. I'l build another one someday and make it even better than that car was. My plans include a twin turbo 4.6L 32 valve Cobra engine with a custom K-member to mount if farther back and lower. Also, a custom independent short/long arm suspension mounted to a custom tube chassis that is integrated into the stock unibody. 13 inch brakes all around, 4 piston calipers, 17 inch wheels. Bright red paint with a black interior. This expensive project will have to wait quite awhile I think.
