Are you sure that the guide broke? Have you taken off the valve cover off to see that it is broken? I'm sure that if it broke, the chain or teeth on the gear would be broken since its a big piece of metal in there. The only way you could is take the valve cover off to see if its where you can reach it, if not, you might have to take off the timing chain cover.

yes its the upper guide that broke but my teeth on my gear are fine nothing lookes damaged there... yes i took the vavle cover off when i herd the noise.. and the upper guide that is hold in by two bolts that snapped in two. the half piece is still bolted down so un-bolted it and got it out of there and the other half that snapped.. well i dont know where its it. somewhere in the motor.. hopeing its in the oil pan... any ideas?

okay i'm going out now to take off front timing cover upper? would the guide be in there caught up against something???
probably not... you may want to look around on the head and make sure it is not sitting up there still.. but it probably fell down into the oil pan, in which case you better fish it out.

Don't worry about replacing the guide it is not sold anymore because of the problems it has caused, like yours.

LOL you got thart right! i wish i had 4,grand to get the motor and have it dropped in. but i dont have 4 grand yet. lol. but anyways.. guys i need some help now.. took off valve cover, took all the bolts out for the front upper timing chain cover but the cover would still not come off. and i believe i got all of the bolts expect for one that i found.. i looked inside, down behind the upper chain where the cam gears are at and i found 1 small bolt looks like a size 10m. and i dont know if that is what is holding in the cover still but I said fuck it cuz i dont feel like/or know if i have to take cams out and upper timing chain off to get to this bolt. any helps thanks?

Do not take the cams out!!

Mark and pull the distributer first.

There are 9 bolts holding the upper cover.
2 connect upper to lower
3 on left side
3 on right side
1 on right side just behind where the distributer goes

once you have all these off you will kinda have to pry at it with a screwdriver (careful not to hurt any thing) and tap it (carefully) with a rubber hammer to break it loose.

thanks a lot dude but first time i try this.. i didn't mark the disturbor i just kinda pulled it with all the spark plug wires still attached to it. then when i gave up i just put the disturbor back in the way i found it lined up when i took it. at first i was kinda worried cuz i didn't mark it or anything.. but my car started up fine and ran fine so guess i'm fine.

hehe thats good s13hatch. i'm not so lucky i have no clue where mine went when it broke. could be in the timing cover or oil pan and if its not in any of those places i'm just gonna junk the motor cuz even if i take the lower guide out and replace the tensioner i'll still always have a rattling sound if i dont get that broken piece out.

okay sorry to kinda hijack the thread but wouldnt taking off the timing chain cover allow to chain to jump off the gears? has that ever happened to anyone?

dont worry about the lower tensioner it if the chain does not have any slop, if it is sloppy then you will want to buy a timing chain kit.

it should not be making any rattling if you took the broke piece out.. you did take it out when you had the valve cover off didn't you?

you are sure you lost a piece of the the broken guide down inside??

you can't take the lower chain off and expect it to still be drivable :-/
you can only take off the top guide the one between the the cams

you probably messed up your timing gl
dude what are u talking about. i'm so confussed.. I throught i was allowed to remove the upper timing chain guide and lower chain guide and throw them away cuz you dont need them on cuz they rattle and tend to break.. so what are u saying?? i remoeve the wrong guides? i'm so fucking confussed... fuck it someone buy my car off me for 1,000 dollars i payed 2grand for it with new motor.. I"m only gonna give my story out one more.. time... My upper chain guide broke off.. okay.... then i read online that I do not need the upper guide or lower guide.. so i said too myself okay since i dont have the upper one anymore i'll remove the lower guide.. so i removed the lower guide.. now was i not soppose to do that???? somone post pics on this thread so i know what i'm taking out.. please.. and if i put the part back in will my car be fine again??
