I try to do a quick search on forum but couldnt find someone who was doing it through shift hole .. just filler hole ...So i decided to change my tranny oil since who knows when its last been done and 2nd feels rough on cold shifts... so i was told the best way to do it is pour fluid through shifter hole is easier than filler plug thats on top of tranny hard to get to ... so i was wondering do u just unplug the drain plug and let it drain and then pour it through hole? sounds easy enough. but my real question is how much do you pour in? i heard it was 2.4 quarts so do i gotta measure it to the precise amount or do i gotta pour it to a certain level or something?? thanks.

You're still going to have to remove the filler plug because that's how you know how much to put in. Once you start getting a steady stream out of the filler, you know it's the correct level. You can still pour through the top, but use the filler as a gauge.

yea sorry i ment 2.4 liters but yea ok so i gotta unplug the filler hole no matter what... so when it starts coming out the filler plug it up? i just wanted to do it through shift hole because to get under car i will need to raise it quite a bit .. plus im lower than stock ride hight so then if i jack it up my car will be uneven and i cant go by the filler hole .... plus the guys at o'reilly's told me to pour through shift hole.
btw mines a 89 ka24e MT

1. Jack car up, place drip pan under transmission, unscrew drain plug. RESULT: Fluid will start to come out.

2. Lower car to ensure all fuild possible drains out. Inspect drain plug, wipe off metal shavings.

3. When fluid stops coming out, jack car back up. Replace drain plug.

4. Unscrew & remove filler plug from upper left side of transmission by shifter. Lower car.

5. Remove shifter.

6. Pour oil into shifter hole until oil leaks a steady stream out of the filler plug that was removed in step 4.

7. After fluid stops leaking from filler port, place empty drip pan under transmission. Jack car back up. Replace filler plug.

8. Replace same amount of oil into shifter hole that leaked into fresh drip pan in step 7, maybe a dash extra for good measure.

9. Reinstall shifter, radio bezel etc.

10. Wash hands.

11. Drive and enjoy

oh yea almost forgot im wondering if this is good ,this is the gear oil they gave me at o'reillys : MasterPro chemicals (brand)
GL-5
80W-90

i heard your supposed to use gl-4 but i asked the guy and he said gl-5 replaced it ... i wonder if this type is good for cold shifting like i am having probs with like i said feels really rough on cold shifts into 2nd ...

also he said i am to use this same exact type for diff oil ... i want to do oil change on diff too ... now idk if i should use this exact type or not??

GL-5 will eat your syncros like cops at a Krispy Kreme. Take it back. In 99% of cars, it's fine, but the additives in it are no-bueno. Amsoil or Redline offer decently-priced GL-4 and quick shipping.

As for jacks, you're gonna need to get under there at some point. The rest of us are lowered and find a way.

As for unlevel while jacked - get two more stands and jack up the rear.

oh wow i want my syncros! thanks for telling me yea ok gl-4 it is but in the service manual(online) it says gl5 for the diff should i use it on my diff then? its not a stock diff btw. and yea i was just gonna do what mikester wrote out ..

haha sorry , yea i ment that i was going from what the guy told me it was some after market lsd i just assume its not a cusco. its 7am i slept a few hours this whole week sorry if im making no sense and not explaining stuff right lol

but anyways would the gl-5 i got work good with the diff or wat?

You can't just look under the car and see if you have an aftermarket diff or not. Aftermarket diffs don't replace the entire pumpkin, just the internals. If you had an aftermarket diff COVER, you would easily be able to see it. As for diff oil, if you have an aftermarket diff, buy something designed for an aftermarket diff. I ran Cusco 80w-140 in my Nismo diff, but any heavier weight gear oil will work in the diff.

As for having the car level, jack it up and remove the plug, then lower the car back down and pour the oil. You can have someone watch, even with the car on the ground, and you should be able to fit a drain pan under there.

i see why he said it replaced it for that brand he ment cuz i read on the back and it says it can be used for gl-2-3-4 but i want to use a thinner oil like 75w-90 for tranny would be better on cold shifts huh..
and ima buy gl-5 80w-140 for the diff should be right.

ok well i tried to do it today buy had no success first i took off the panel with the shift boot then the rubber boot under that with the metal gasket unscrewed the screws for the short shifter and the 4 bolts under the short shifter piece that are on the tranny but could no way at all pull or twist the short shifter piece off or take out the actuall shifter so i couldnt pour it through there.... then i got my car up on ramps and jacked up the front and had it perfectly even and went under and could no way in hell unscrew the filler square bolt ... impossible so i gave up fort the day... any suggestions on the screw or the shifter or is there a do it thread or guide or something? i feel so retarted lol..

^^ LMAO!!! Short shifter has a couple bolts you missed more fwd on top of the tranny shifter housing that are MUCH easier to get to from under the car....

The big square bolt, use a 1/2" drive breaker bar or ratchet with small extension. If you need more leverage, use a pipe or whatever you can fit over the end of it as an extender... When you put it back on, don't put it on nearly that tight, just snug... Wouldn't be surprised if your tranny fluid has NEVER been changed.

ive used breaker bar on the square bolt .... put a long metal pipe on the wrench too and tried with all my force to move it but it just made an indent on the sides of the bolt....
and as for the short shifter i took off its 4 bolts but couldnt take 1 of the 4 blots on the tranny as the short shifter piece is in the way of it so even if i would have took off the other 2 from under the car that are on the tranny i would still be unable to get to one of them .... idk is the short shifter supposed to come off with the whole cap or before it cuz like i said i cant get to one of the bolts as its over one of them .. i never had a short shifter b4 so thats why its trippin me out ... i woulda had no prob if it wasnt short shiter or if i was the one to have installed it ...

I had a short shift on my S14, and I preferred to take the entire thing off. However, I have seen people just remove the lever out the assembly. Just be careful and don't lose the springs that are in there. When you're breaking torque like that, if you can, use gravity to help you out and use your body weight to push, not pull. Also, slow and steady wins the race when it comes to breaking torque.

Man all u gotta do remove shifter easy, just use snap ring pliers, remove drain plug drain old fluid. Then it take two and a half bottles of I recommend redline or royal purple so just send 2-1/2 bottles through the shift hole if ya want to do it that way. Easy simple 20 min gear oil change:)

#28 ·
^He said Royal Purple. Bahahahhahahah :rotflmao
Someones never had a B&M (6-Bolt Plate) style short shifter. If you can pull your lever out of that thing you are either God or have some janky broken shit....

#32 ·
I had a "B&M Style" short shifter knock-off, so yes, it was janky. ;)haha It worked for the entire time I had the car and paid about a 1/3 the price of the real B&M. There was a top plate that held down the shift lever, attached with four screws that were quite easy to pull out. When I installed it, I did it from the top, it wasn't too difficult to get to the front bolts. I just used a dog-bone style wrench, and went at it with patience.

yea when i first sawy royal purple seemed sketch to me and everybody says it sucks so i wouldnt touch the stuff! i guess ill just try to remove the 6 bolts from the tranny and see if the short shifter comes off with it ...

I currently have a C's short shifter on my CA tranny... Comes out in 2-3 pcs with snap ring etc. My KA/SR tranny had a single-piece short-shift... Much easier to take out... But then again, I use the filler port on the side of the tranny.

Drain it and then mabey this will work.

I don't know whats the difference between my Nismo short shifter and everyone elses (I forget what the stock one looks like but I'l check my 2nd stock spare transmisson) but all I have to do is unbolt 4 6mm allen bolts and the shitfter slides right up, put the oil in the hole and put it back in, what takes the longest part is putting the oil in! lol
