There are no clutch plates to slip in a vlsd. the vlsd unit is sealed, and not servicable. the gear oil you change is to lubricate the ring and pinion only, so you dont need to add any additives.

why? do you understand how vlsds work? the gear oil you use in the housing does not touch the inside of the vlsd unit

 

as i understand it when one wheel spins faster than the other the silicone in the fluid heats up causing the 2 plates/clutches to warm up expand and lock together

 

The fluid with silicon is SEALED in the vlsd unit. its not gear oil! you can not change the vlsd fluid by changing the diff oil.

 

vlsd + additive = waste of money

Then your better off with a helical LSD, start saving. Old used VLSD are peices of shit.

 

Haha. I am searching for some differential info when I came across this. Im sorry for bringing back a dead thread but it had me cracking up.

 

you can shim a vlsd to act as a 1.5 way or a 2 way diff. you take the dif out of the carrier, remove the ring gear and stack shims on a part of the diff itself. makes the preload go way up, changes the way it acts and basically refreshes it.
pretty sure i found it on z ilvia but not sure.

let me know how the shims work for you i got my j30 last week for 30$. it works just fine but could be a little more aggresive.

 

I have a 180 diff. and as far as I know it is a Viscous differential, meaning no clutches. So you need no additive. I've never heard of that shimming trick but it sounds something worth researching. Sorry for hijacking but What is the diffence between a 2 way and a 1.5? and what is better for drifting and what is better for racing and why? all i know is everyones telling me to get a 2way but no one can tell me why?!?!

 

From what I heard 1.5 and 2 way diffs are better for track use(not daily driver) cuz they have to be serviced frequently.

 

Mmmm...but a VLSD behaving like a 1.5/2 Way would be pretty rad...so long as it can stand the abuse.
